Second Chances
One of the core themes of Running With Scissors is second chances. Most prominently, Jude’s getting a second chance with the band he screwed over. Not everyone is thrilled about it, and they let him know right from the start. Others are more willing to see how it goes this time. Has he matured? Is he really repentant for what he did in the past?
This is a theme that comes up in a lot of my books, and it’s not by accident. I like playing with the idea of characters pulling themselves together, maturing, and actually changing. A number of my stories involve ex-lovers coming back together after they realize they walked away from something special. The Distance Between Us, Meet Me in the Middle, No Distance Left to Run (with Aleksandr Voinov), Ex Equals, It’s Complicated, Kneel Mr. President, and The Virgin Cowboy Billionaire’s Secret Baby—all involve people trying to put the past behind them and give it another try. I even have a book that features a reformed cheater (A.J.’s Angel), and one where a man is sent to kill the ex-lover who destroyed his life (A Chip In His Shoulder).
Like I said, it’s a common theme. I like exploring the growth people have to go through to reach a point where they can forgive or be forgiven.
Does everyone deserve a second chance? No. Definitely not. I’ve removed people from my own life for various reasons, and even after I’ve long since forgiven them, I would sooner eat my own eyeballs than invite them back in. Self-preservation and all. This is something I keep in mind when I write about second chances in my books—would I give this person a second chance, or tell them to go kick rocks?
So not everyone gets a second chance in fiction or in real life, but it’s a theme I enjoy exploring, and Running With Scissors was no exception. Jude knows this is his last shot at returning to his band, and he has to take some pretty big risks to do it—quitting his job on a moment’s notice, for one. It’s not going to be easy for him, but he wants that second chance, not only at a career, but with the people who were his close friends from childhood up until the day he walked away.
Now if he can just keep himself from falling on love with the new drummer…

About the Author
L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…
L.A.’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).
Blurb
Eighteen months ago, drummer Jude Colburn made the biggest mistake of his life when he walked away from his band just as they were on the brink of success. Now, he’s got a second chance. The band’s bassist just quit, and Jude plays bass almost as well as he plays drums. The other band members aren’t thrilled, but they are desperate.
Running with Scissors needs him, but there’s one condition: no hooking up with bandmates. That’s what ruined things eighteen months ago, after all. Jude’s on board, but no one warned him about the drummer who replaced him. A.J. Palmer is shy and unassuming . . . until he hits the stage. He gets Jude’s attention from the first beat, and suddenly that “no hookups” rule isn’t so easy to follow.
Keeping secrets on a tour bus isn’t easy either, and it’s only a matter of time before the band catches on. When everything hits the fan, Jude has to choose: a second chance at the career he’s always regretted leaving, or a shot at the man of his dreams?
