BLURB:
Strange, quiet Luka doesn’t live in this world; long ago he took refuge in his art, escaping into surreal mindscapes inspired by his favorite painters. In the beautifully monstrous realms of his imagination, he is safe from the pain of his losses: his family, his friends, his hope.
Until war breaks out, and he is forced to flee the only home he’s known since he was thirteen.
Captured by an enemy soldier, young Luka is marched across brutal terrain, toward a fate known only by the bearded menace holding him prisoner. Quick with a knife, tireless and strong, Tarik guards the purpose of his mission as he takes Luka deeper and deeper into enemy territory.
When the soldier discovers the painful secret he has been hiding since childhood, Luka fears he is about to endure a new kind of cruelty, worse than being abandoned, ostracized or beaten. Or is it possible the soldier holding Luka prisoner is the one person who isn’t afraid of the truth behind Luka’s silence and lies?
REVIEW:
I don’t even know where to start with how absolutely phenomenal this author is. Every description was so vivid almost tangible in my mind. I loved how descriptive everything was. I LOVED the art that was added in the story. It just created so much more depth and took the entire book to another level.
“I didn’t know if you were a boy or a girl. I didn’t know what the person I was looking for looked like. But when I see you, when I touch you, when I hear your voice, my whole body, my soul knows, it’s you…”
These two men were like puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly. I adored their connection and their chemistry was so real…I can’t even find enough words to convey just how much I loved every single aspect of this story!!
Luka and Tarik are both victims of a war torn country. Their leaders and the system that is supposed to thrive are corrupt and deteriorating. Luka has only ever known pain, hurt and anger from others. Tarik was drafted into a war he didn’t believe in. These men come together in the direst of times and even though they are suppose to hate each other they can’t seem to bring themselves to. They embark on a dangerous journey to escape the war and live in peace.
This story is so painful but it’s so incredibly beautiful and hopeful too. Luka’s overall goodness and Tarik’s patience, understanding and kindness made it all come together. There are so many layers to this story. It was nothing like I expected. From Luka’s unbelievable talent, to Tarik’s amazing intelligence and education I just wasn’t expecting the characters to have so much depth. I loved being surprised throughout the book.
Without a doubt this is one of the best books I’ve read all year. I can’t even begin to think how I’ll wait for book 2 without losing my mind. There are so many things we still need to know, I can’t wait!! I highly recommend this one…GET IT…you have to!!!
