Dear Author,
He stood, head bowed, body tense, waiting. No matter what happened next, his life would never be the same…
Photo Description:
A naked man stands with his back to the viewer, a plain white floor beneath his feet. Ahead of him, a pair of large black doors are ajar, revealing a glimpse of bright light. The man’s shoulders are slightly hunched and his head is bowed; he appears hesitant to face whatever fate awaits him through the doors.
This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group’s “Love is an Open Road” event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.
REVIEW:
I love Kim Fielding’s mind. She never fails to satisfy me when she writes. I wasn’t that sure what this story would be about, but I grabbed it as soon as I saw who wrote it.
Enitan, a resident of a great city, has been sorely wronged by his own sister. His sister Minna has been jealous of him since he was an infant, and has always hated that their father far preferred Enitan over herself. Well, now she got them both. She poisoned her father, and coerced a couple servants into siding with her on her accusation that Enitan was the murder.
Their civilization has an easy answer for criminals. When they are found guilty, they are taken out of the city and thrown over a cliff, down in an area referred to as “The Downs”. Supposedly inhabited by demons, no one ever comes back.
When Enitan is thrown into the downs, he is lucky to survive. He is rescued by someone and the rescuer is trying to heal him. But why would a demon heal him before killing him, or eating him, or whatever else it is that demons do?
I really enjoyed this story and the two MCs. Enitan is so bent on vengeance, and Rig is so special. I think Rig is one of the favorite characters I’ve read in quite some time. No more spoilers, pick this one up for a nice short read. After all, they’re free! My advice read them all….but start with this one!
