There’s something that Tobias and Thomas Whitmore never intended to tell their family—the fact that they’re gay and in love. But these two young men are about to discover that secrets run in their family. For on a weekend in Montauk to celebrate their grandmother’s 80th birthday, one spilled secret leads to another, and before long, the tragedies of the past, the uncertainties of the present, and the uncharted path of the future will collide… and change this family forever.
REVIEW:
“He’s the one person I want by my side, whether I’m watching a movie… or at a funeral… or on a rollercoaster ride. When I’m laughing I want to hear him laughing with me. When I cry, I want him to hold me and tell me everything will be okay. He’s my life. He’s my world. Isn’t that what love is?”
Oh my god, I’ve died and gone to heaven and discovered myself a new favourite author while I was up there. If I had to list my two favourite things to read in m/m books, I would choose a sweet romance and a taboo kink. As you can probably imagine, the two rarely meet in one story. When I picked up this book I was assuming I was going to be heading into a bit of dirty erotica (despite the purrty cover) so imagine how freakin’ excited I was to find instead the sweetest little tale about twin brothers in love.
Tobias and Thomas have been in love and “together” since they were seniors in high school. For the past eight years, while Thomas was in the navy, they’ve been living mostly separate lives but now they’ve finalized plans to move in together and open a café. The rest of their family doesn’t even know that they’re gay, let alone a couple, and that’s exactly how the twins intend for it to stay. But over the course of their grandmother’s birthday weekend secrets are exposed and not everyone is prepared to accept their relationship.
For some reason when I find a book like this I usually don’t have high expectations. I tend to think of them as trashy little tales, which are generally self-published and of mediocre to poor quality. But to be fair, I’ve read many that really are like that. This story most definitely does not fall into that category. The short story stands up to Wilde City’s typical high standards and was decidedly well written. Yes, I’ll add the usual cry of all short story reviewers – I wish this book was longer – but that’s not because I felt anything was rushed or missing, but because I didn’t want to leave these characters.
The author inarguably proves with this book that taboo subjects don’t need to be written in a skeevy, nasty fashion and I am headed straight to the publisher’s website to discover what other books Liberty Lace has available.
