BLURB:
Blaze, the most powerful werewolf on the planet has found his omega, Aden. Together with Conner and Darric they finally become true mates, fulfilling an ancient prophecy by the goddess Sirius and forming Orion’s Circle. The battle against the terrorist group, the Winter Circle, has begun.
Blaze, however, is fighting his own battle. Aden is due to birth a child, and despite Blaze’s six hundred years of being an Alpha, nothing has prepared him for his hardest challenge yet — how to become a father. His struggles are hurting the people he loves the most and threatening their bond.
The madman who kidnapped and tortured Aden still hasn’t been caught, and when the worst happens and their circle is broken, Blaze has to fight his biggest threat yet – his own inner weakness – an enemy against which his Alpha strength will be useless. Blaze has to learn that true strength is only found in forgiveness, and sometimes the most powerful weapon is love.
REVIEW:
I’m one of those stubborn readers who will get pissed off by one event in a book and decide that I hate everything and everyone and declare that I’m never ever going to even think about looking at the author’s name on Goodreads ever again. Doesn’t matter if it’s not fair, or if I’m shooting myself in the foot, I get angry or distraught (and maybe a little dramatic), and that’s it – mind made up. But damn it, that doesn’t really work so well when I have to review the book for a blog. Then it really does matter if it’s not fair. So for the purpose of this review I’m going to attempt to put my feelings aside and be as objective as possible as I tell you about this book that I hated with a fiery passion that most other readers seem to really enjoy.
The story picks up seven months after the first book ended with Aden fourteen hours into giving birth to the four men’s first child. Blaze, as usual, has his head up his ass and is making everything about himself, but Conner and Darric are on hand to smooth things over between their other two mates. Ahhh Darric. My. Favourite. Character.
However, the story’s focus can’t remain on the baby for too long because there are still several other loose threads from the first book that we need to continue with. The two most important issues being – the evil/mad doctor who is still on the loose from Aden’s former pack, and the alliance that Blaze and some other wolves are trying to form with humans to see wolves incorporated into the military. Both of these storylines are furthered in this book and actually, I should probably note at this point that you would find it very frustrating to attempt these books as standalones. This series has been written to be read in order.
For the most part, I enjoyed this book more than the first. While the relationship between Blaze and Aden continued to annoy the ever-living heck out of me, there was a lot more forward movement plot wise to distract me from their dramatics. And the great thing about having four, three, four main characters is that there are others to focus on if you don’t like one of them. While at least one of the plot arcs appears to have ended with this book, others continue on into the third, and from what I understand, final book. But I’m also assuming there will be spin off series, maybe? Considering a neighboring group of wolves also seem to have found themselves with a messy romance brewing.
As for the clusterfuck of epic proportions tricky twist I didn’t see coming, well like I said, I’m trying to remain as objective as possible. Just because I was less than impressed with the turn the story took, doesn’t mean it wasn’t actually a good story. I did also say that I enjoyed this second book more than the first. I explained the situation to my fellow reviewers and received responses ranging from – say the author made you cry and get on with your life (I paraphrased a little there), right through to “set your kindle on fire!” (That one was not paraphrased.)
Am I going to read the next book? Jury’s out on that one. Honestly, I think I’m going to wait until reviewers braver than me dive in first and I’ll see what they have to report. I mean, it’s paranormal right? So anything is possible.
