BLURB:
Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.
But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.
When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.
They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.
REVIEW:
One of the things I love most about reading is the wide range of emotions books can pull from me. I love the highs and lows and everything in between. I’d love to say this story gave me those same feelings but sadly, it did not. Reading this I almost felt absolutely nothing throughout the entire story. This story was so difficult for me to get through, especially since it evoked no emotion in me and I honestly didn’t really care for the characters.
I also struggled with the “Heroes” theme….there was no firefighting in the book. There was only a mention of being a firefighter and being in the service. I would have liked some firefighting scenes so it tied it together.
Andrew and Tanner have been friends for years. They’re in their early 20’s, free and ready to explore. They’ve decided to trek across the country travelling so they can see the world. They’ve spent months planning and saving for this once in a lifetime trip.
One thing I didn’t understand was if from the beginning of the story they both knew the other was gay? There was no big, reveal, so that sort of through me. Also, throughout the beginning it seemed that Andrew was really confused about his feelings but it wasn’t clear to me if he was confused because he had feelings for his best friend or if it was because Tanner is a man. The chemistry between these 2 also fell short for me. It was sort of emotionless and disappointing. Unfortunately nothing really hooked me about the story.
What is obvious is that the story is written well. I found no real terrible editing errors and it flowed well. I really wish I could say I loved this but it was just not for me.
