AUTHOR: April Kelley
PUBLISHER: eXtasy Books
LENGTH: 103 pages
BLURB:
Luis Flynn has been fighting depression off and on most of his life. He figures it’s genetic or a product of his childhood or something. Whatever it is, he thought he’d won the war between himself and depression, until it seems to come back again. Little by little over the course of a few months, Luis finds himself slipping further and further into that black hole.
He’s also had a crush on Royce, his boss, since the day he met him, not that he would ever admit it. Luis can tell Royce finds him attractive, and they even kiss, but Royce constantly pushes him away, which doesn’t help his inner struggles.
When it comes to relationships, timing is everything. With Luis and Royce, the timing might be too off.
REVIEW:
Luis Flynn and his brothers were horribly abused as children by their father, their mother died when they were very young and their father, an alcoholic beat them and molested the oldest boy Brad. Luis was beaten so bad by his father the day Brad saved them that he ended up in hospital and he still has the scars to show for it. Luckily, the youngest brother Caden had been far too young to remember much about their father because he hadn’t been touched by him.
Luis isn’t exactly sure what caused him to suffer from depression for most of his life but he has and it’s getting worse. Luis has spent a considerable amount of time in hospital for depression over the years but it keeps coming back. Not only does Luis have to fight off the depression he has to fight against the need to cut. He found early on that cutting feels good, it takes his mind off the depression and makes him happy for a little while the only problem is that it’s not working as well as it used to.
Luis has been working as a mechanic for Royce for several years now and has been in love with him for longer. Royce is incredibly attracted to Luis as well but he is Luis’s boss and a good deal older than him as well. That doesn’t stop him sending out mixed signals to Luis though and that definitely doesn’t do anything to help Luis’s depression at all. It all comes to a head when Royce calls Luis into his office and finds out that yes, Luis is just as attracted to him but after he kisses Luis he pushes him away and Luis’s delicate psyche just can’t handle any more rejection whether it’s real or perceived!
Royce had no idea Luis felt the same way about him too, the only problem is, he feels like a dirty old man he is quite a bit older than Luis and should know better. When Royce goes to Luis’s house to see if he’s alright after he walked during work he’s shocked to discover Luis is having a complete meltdown, he never knew about Luis suffering from depression or his need to cut. When Luis explains that he needs to go to hospital to get better Royce has a rude awaking as to just how much Luis means to him and age be damned!
While Luis is getting the help he needs in hospital Royce uses the time to learn everything he can about depression because as far as he’s concerned Luis is his and when he gets out of the hospital nothing is going to keep them apart! He wants to understand as much as he can what Luis is going through and what he can do in the future to help and keep him on an even keel.
It’s a long, slow haul for Royce and Luis to get to a good, healthy place but they work at it. Luckily for Luis, Royce is prepared to not only help him as much as he can to get past this “bump” in the road, he has made Luis believe that he has overcome his hang up about their age difference and is prepared to spend the rest of his life proving to Luis how much he loves him! Luis knows he lives his life in a delicate balance but he knows with Royce there to love him, it’s going to be more than worth it. Getting Back to Good is yet another wonderful addition to April Kelley’s Pickleville Series. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to one and all.
