REVIEW:
Yeah! Cory is coming in to her power and I love her.
Amy Lane wrote this series a while ago, has re-edited and re-released them with DSP Publications. The series follows Cory, a human, as she discovers the hidden world of the fae and other paranormal beings that live in Northern California. In the first book, Vulnerable, she meets, loves, and loses Adrian her vampire lover, but keeps Green, their fae lover, and ruler of Green’s Hill. The second book in the series, Wounded, has been broken in to two parts. Wounded continues the story of Cory, our little goth girl turned Little Goddess, as she recovers from the trauma of losing Adrian, and finds new drama in San Fransisco.
At the beginning of Wounded we find Cory and Renny, her werekitty friend living in San Fransisco going to school. The have become friends with Nicky, who turns out not to be the nice little college boy they thought he was, and he gets them in to some serious trouble with a nasty bird shifter named Goshawk. Which leads to Green coming to the rescue and discovering that Goshawk is just the tip of the iceberg.
Let’s see…. there is a lot here and I don’t want to give too much away, but I do want to display the epicness of this story. So in book one, there was a battle, and the bad guy turned out to be aimed at Green by an old “friend” of his named Mist, a fae from the old country. Mist is a right bastard, who helped traumatize Green in his younger years. Green escaped, came to America, met Adrian, settled Green’s Hill, and went about his business. Now, Goshawk the little shit, is involved in a revenge plot hatched by Mist, to get back at, or to get back, Green. Cory is caught up in the middle of it, as well as Bracken her new fae lover, and Nicky, the little bird shifter than kinda starts it all.
Still with me? Most of the drama occurs in Wounded volume 1, and Cory is left pretty wounded at the end. In volume 2, we see the recovery off all of the parties, Cory, Bracken, Green, Nicky, Renny, and crew…. plus the preparation for the show down with Mist and Goshawk. So this story doesn’t have huge amounts of action, but it does really focus on character growth and development, and the bonding between all of the members off this odd little group. Not just Cory, Green, Bracken, and poor Nicky trying to work out how this relationship stuff will work, but we see progress for the damaged werekitty Renny and Officer Max, Arturo and Grace do some snuggling, and Cory picks up some new admirers. And some ink! There is lots of time spent in the communal apartment in San Fransisco, lots of planning with Green getting his people and businesses all sorted out back at the Hill, and a few confrontations, all leading up to the big bang. Which was all very cool! I love to see how these folks all fit in together, especially the Cory/Bracken/Green/Nicky situation.
So it’s a fantastic book, I see why it was broken in to two parts, it was a big massive book the first time I read it. And I see why it was broken up at the point that it was. I’ve given both of these books 4.5 hearts instead of the 5 hearts I gave Vulnerable, not because I liked them any less, but I think it’s because they didn’t have the emotional impact that Vulnerable had for me. It’s a fine line between at 4.5 heart rating and a 5 heart rating, both are great ratings and all are great books, I just felt more drama and trauma (cough*Adrian*cough) from Vulnerable which got it the 5 hearts in my little heart! But both volumes of Wounded are phenomenal, and continue the story so well. It’s all about recovery and growth for these folks. And revenge…. Some nice revenge. There are moments of sweetness between Cory and her men, and a song that made me cry. There is also some sexy times, one on one with Cory and Bracken, and Cory and Green. Some implied m/m, but no on page guy action. I missed that a bit too I guess.
It’s urban fantasy Amy Lane, not really m/m, so this series won’t be for everyone, but those of you that like fantasy books with a good dose of sex and romance would probably love this series. If you can get past the no m/m part, and accept the girl bits, you’ll find a really good love story. I’m looking forward to the next ones, Bound and Rampant, to be re-released, and I can’t even tell you how much I’m waiting for the new one!
