He was watching me.
I sensed his presence weeks before I saw him. Day after day, I peered out into the woods beside the lake house, unable to shake the feeling that someone was out there. But I never caught a glimpse of him. Eventually I convinced myself it had to be my imagination, that spending so much time by myself was starting to mess with my mind.
I was so wrong.
So begins Nathaniel Logan’s story. Nate is a twenty two year old college student, reeling after a recent breakup while struggling to find his way in the world. He’s spending the summer at his stepdad’s lake house in Northern California, where he’s supposed to be finding himself. But what finds him instead will alter the course of Nate’s life forever.
REVIEW:
I had to review this book and share my love of this story with you all. Feral was the first book I ever read by Alexa Land, and I’ve got to be honest and say I think it might be one of my favorites! As you all know if you’re following my reviews I’m a huge fan boy of The Firsts and Forever Series, but I’m also a real lover of the strange, the dark, and the unknown. After reading the Prologue (which is the section of the blurb that I bolded above) I have to say I was hooked!
In Feral, Ms. Land tells us the story of a young guy named Nathaniel who is kind of floundering through life. He has been in college for four years, but hasn’t really accomplished anything towards what he wants to do with his life. Basically that happened because he has no idea what he wants to be when he grows up. He has been in a bad relationship for three years, that he saw as a relationship but the other guy saw as just sex. The other guy just announced he is bored and it is over. Nate is devastated, but holds it in.
When it finally hits him, Nate finds himself lying on the floor and crying hysterically in class shortly thereafter. His new stepfather, who he doesn’t know all that well, comes to pick him up from school. Shortly thereafter, Nate ends up unloading all this problems, and coming out to the stepfather at the same time. Luckily the stepfather is a really great guy and he hands the keys to his remote lake house in Northern California to Nate and arranges everything so that Nate can spend the summer alone, twenty miles from the nearest neighbor, in a glass house on a beautiful lake. They both hope that some time alone will help Nate move on with his life.
Did I mention the twenty miles to the nearest neighbor part? Then why does Nate feel like someone is watching him? And who was the beautiful “Nikolai” in the photo he found, and in all the paintings in the studio he stumbled upon in the woods? Why does he feel so drawn to someone who lived in the 1920’s?
Alexa Land did a great job with the character development on this book. I really felt like I could see the characters and as usual with one of her books, I read it straight through. I’ve read other books with a similar subject matter that were made into teen fan girl movies that were far less believable. I liked that neither of the MCs in this story was perfect, and their imperfections were in the story and not hidden away. If you aren’t familiar with Ms. Land’s books, beware, all of her works keep you up reading way too late!
I highly recommend Feral. It was Ms. Land’s very first book, but it doesn’t read like a first book. Pick it up today if you enjoy a tender, sweet, getting to know each other story with a paranormal twist and a happy ending. Lastly, I have to also add that I love the cover of this book and the cover was what got me to click on it on Amazon when I originally bought the book. Kudos to the artist that created it.

Thank you so much for this review, Dan! This book will always hold a special place in my heart as my very first, and it means a lot to me that you enjoyed my freshman effort! Thanks for the compliment on the cover, too! I’m the cover artist, I do all my own covers. At first, it was because that was all I could afford as an indie author, but now I do it because I love it! 🙂
I’m very impressed. I didn’t know that you did your own covers. Great job!
