Welcome Meredith 🙂
Fallout (Flight HA1710 #4) by Meredith Russell.
When RJ Scott approached me to be part Flight HA1710, a series based around a plane crash, she presented the idea as not some big blockbuster disaster movie or even necessarily the crash itself, but rather how a massive event might affect people, their lives and their relationships.
In Fallout, a series of actions and decisions lead to my characters Harrison and Elijah not even being on the plane and this left them with a whole lot of what-ifs. What if events before the crash had happened differently? What if they had been on the plane?
I was asked to think about the times events or decisions made a difference to my life, or maybe they left me with thoughts of what if?
One big decision I had to make recently was about my career. Two years ago I decided to leave my job as a teacher to be a full-time writer and cover designer. It was a big decision. I loved teaching. For me it was an incredible experience, but a mix of things kind of conspired against me.
I haven’t really spoken about it before, but there are times when I get down, I get depressed. For almost a decade I had had the support of pretty much the same colleagues during that time. They knew me, understood me, and I trusted them and felt I could go to them when I needed to. But then the support went. People moved on to other schools and with how the profession has changed even in just the 10 years I was teaching, I realised I didn’t want to start over again with new faces. I needed something different, a new challenge, a new direction.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have something else to move on to. I know that. Some of my friends who are teachers said they wished they had another skill, another interest they could turn to for a while. It was a scary decision to walk away from a job with a secure wage, but I’m glad I did. I feel better about things, happier, calmer. It was a decision where I don’t think about the what-ifs. I made the decision I needed to and that was best for me.
We make decisions all the time. Some good, some bad. What good decisions have you made that maybe led you to something new or better?

Blurb:
Can missing a fatal flight be the wake up call Harrison needs?
When Harrison Kelley is banned from getting on Flight HA1710, it seems to be the perfect ending to a crappy couple of days. Not only did he wreck a wedding, but he’s drunk way too much and been on the receiving end of the groom’s brother’s fists. Being escorted out of the airport by security was just the icing on the wedding cake.
Elijah Pettifer has lusted after Harrison from afar for years but Harrison never sees him as anything more than a friend. If he ever saw him at all. While attempting to defend what little honor Harrison has left, Elijah gets caught up in the wave of chaos surrounding his teenage crush. But missing his flight home because of Harrison’s mess might just be the luckiest thing to ever happen to him.
With a 24 hour ban imposed by the airport, and having only each other for company, the two men grow closer. But will the fate of the airplane they should have been on be the push Harrison needs to walk away from the toxic relationship of his past? And can Elijah make Harrison see exactly what he’s been missing out on because of it?

Smiling, Elijah looked away and to the heated service counter. “I really fancy a bacon sandwich,” he said. Pursing his lips, he teased a lock of his hair at the nape of his neck. “For the hangover, right?”
“Definitely,” Harrison agreed with the excuse, though Elijah didn’t look hungover.
Elijah turned his legs until he was sitting sideways in his seat. He rested his elbow on the back of the chair, and gazed over at the queue of people working their way along the counter, piling their plates with breakfast stuff.
“You know what they say.”
“What?”
“You only live once. Seize the day. Carpe diem.” Harrison laughed.
“That’s rather deep for breakfast.” Elijah smiled, and rested his head in his hand. “Okay, tomorrow, assuming I make it down for breakfast, I will eat bacon,” he announced grandly. “Set me up for a day of sightseeing.” Seemingly content with his choice, he sat up and turned to sit properly to face his bowl of fruit. He nodded to Harrison’s still untouched breakfast. “Are you actually going to eat any of that?”
Harrison raised the slice of over-browned toast. He had to eat something. The last thing he needed was his stomach growling at the point the registrar asked if anyone knew of a reason the bride and groom couldn’t be married. Yes, they can’t because the groom is an idiot. He met Elijah’s eyes. “I’m eating it.” He took an exaggerated bite, gripping the toast between his teeth as he tore the rest of the slice away.
Elijah simply smiled and Harrison was filled with a sense of calm he hadn’t really felt since waking up that morning. He watched Elijah for a moment. He’d noticed last night just how much of an amazing smile the man had but he couldn’t recall seeing it before. It wasn’t like they had never talked before today, in fact Harrison was sure they had shared a smile, a laugh, maybe even exchanged a sentence or two in the past as well as last night. As Elijah lifted his head, Harrison looked away, suppressing the smile that teased the corner of his mouth. Maybe facing people and starting from new without the Antony obsession hanging over him wasn’t going to be that bad after all.
