Just a little love bite: Patience is a virtue…until someone’s life is on the line.
Garner Vorzman suspects that his beloved—the other half of his soul—is none other than Brock Sanchez. While everyone considers the human an all-around good guy, he is also a womanizing playboy. Having spent almost one hundred years in the military, Garner draws on his knowledge of strategy. He uses the levity of the coven Christmas party to his advantage and seduces Brock. Unfortunately, the human runs from their connection. Hoping if he leaves Brock alone he will come to crave what they’d shared, Garner waits for months. He runs out of time when drinking blood from other donors becomes nearly impossible. Angry at the human’s apparent obstinateness, Garner tracks Brock down and issues an ultimatum. Give them one dalliance every other week so Garner can draw the blood he needs, or their one night stand will no longer remain a secret. If Brock agrees, can Garner turn the strong-arm tactic into something that will win the man’s affection?
REVIEW:
For all the brevity of Charlie Richard’s books, she never fails to leave me wanting more. Ms. Richards has done something in the last several years that few authors can claim: she has created a mythology that spans FOUR different series, and encompasses dozens of books. Her style is as charming and unique now in More Than Patient as it was in the very first Wolves of Stone Ridge book.
In More Than Patient, after four books and numerous mysterious hints and frustrating clues, Charlie Richards lets us in on the secret of Brock’s sexual orientation and the identity of his unnamed lover. Garner, vampire and IT wizard, had a delightful romp with the reticent Brock at the now oft-referenced and famous Christmas party from the first A Loving Nip book. Now, as can be expected from Ms. Richards, she doesn’t let her preordained lovers have it easy, not at all.
I’ll avoid the spoilers, but let me just impart that assumption does indeed makes a**holes of us all. Garner refuses to swallow his pride and go after his beloved, and Brock, from a place of well-worn denial, refuses to go back and confront the vampire he can’t stop thinking about. Both men think they know the truth, and when the inevitable confrontation occurs after some meddling from friends, the lovers find they have more than the obstacle of misunderstanding to get past.
This book is 89 pages, a fairly standard length for Ms. Richards and her stories, though the reason this fangirl can’t give her 5 Stars is that this particular title felt more like a setup to the next book than a story of its own. Too much time was spent with the lovers apart than together, and it’s in times like that when Charlie Richards really shines. She has some of the sweetest and charming character dynamics I have had the privilege of reading, and I just wish she’d used a bit more of that magic in More Than Patient. This book gets 4 Stars anyway, because even when she’s not at her best, Charlie Richards is still one of the best m/m paranormal romance writers in the genre today.
Short, sweet, and full of her trademark style, More Than Patient was worth the wait for me.
