Lovebytes guestpost

Hi there! I’m Kim Fielding and I’m so happy to be visiting Love Bytes today!

Do you have any good luck rituals or charms you enjoy? I’m not superstitious, but here’s mine:

114

It’s a little hanging ornament that a good friend gave me shortly after I published my first novel. Every time a new novel comes out–on the day I get to hold it in my hand–I write the title on a fresh page of the ornament.

There are 16 pages. When I wrote on the first one, I remember thinking, I’ll never fill this. Those blank pages will mock me forever. But you know what? I just filled in the 12th page. Instead of mocking me, those empty papers serve as inspiration, reminding me that I have stories to tell. Heck, I’ll be writing on the 13th page later this summer. My charm is almost full!

So let me tell you about novel #12. As you can see in the photo, it’s called Astounding! (yes, with the exclamation point). It’s a sci-fi/fantasy story starring a pulp magazine editor who’s down on his luck, and a Tab Hunter lookalike who claims to be an alien. There’s a road trip, a best friend who may remind you a bit of a certain famous fantasy novelist, and cameo appearances by some guys from my previous stories. There’s despair, hope, flying, and the promise of new beginnings. I hope you decide to check it out.

Now I’m off to begin something to fill up that 14th page!

Carter Evans is founder and editor-in-chief of Astounding!—a formerly popular spec fiction magazine currently in its death throes. Not only can he do nothing to save it, but stuck in a rathole apartment with few interpersonal connections, he can’t seem to do much to rescue his future either. And certainly all the booze isn’t helping. He snaps when he receives yet another terrible story submission from the mysterious writer J. Harper—and in a drunken haze, Carter sends Harper a rejection letter he soon regrets.

J. Harper turns out to be John Harper, a sweet man who resembles a ’50s movie star and claims to be an extraterrestrial. Despite John’s delusions, Carter’s apology quickly turns into something more as the two lonely men find a powerful connection. Inexplicably drawn to John, Carter invites him along on a road trip. But as they travel, Carter is in for some big surprises, some major heartbreak… and just maybe the promise of a good future after all.

author bio

I have lived in Illinois, Oregon, Nebraska, and Croatia, but for a long time now I’ve called the boring part of California home. I have a husband, two daughters, a day job as a university professor, and a passion for travel. I write in many genres–contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, historical–but no matter when and where my stories are set, I love complex worlds and complicated characters. I think that often it’s a person’s flaws that make him stronger and more beautiful.

love bytes question

Question from Ana Zabo:  What’s the book or story that first got you interested in queer romance?

I came at m/m romance from a few directions. One of them was mainstream genre fiction that has gay characters, such as Lynn Flewelling’s Nightrunners series, Sarah Monette’s Doctrine of Labyrinths series, and Amy Lane’s Little Goddess series. Another direction was slash fanfiction. My particular world was the Buffyverse, in which I paired Spike with most of the other guys. And third was gay literature such as Mary Renault’s The Persian Boy. I’d never read much het romance so didn’t even consider gay romance until after I stumbled into it–which was after I’d written my own fist novel, Stasis.
My question for Jaime Reese: Is there a particular genre, theme, or plot that scares you and yet you’d like to take a stab at writing?
