SERIES: Never Too Late (2015 Daily Dose)

AUTHOR: Nicole McCormick

PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press

LENGTH: 24 Pages

BLURB:

When a stranger runs into Douglas, makes him spill his coffee, and offers to buy him another one, Douglas thinks that’s all it will be. Even though the man is gorgeous. Even though his daughter has other plans. Turns out, the stranger, Anthony, has other plans as well, and Douglas soon agrees to go to a movie with Anthony. It’s absolutely not a date. Douglas has slept with men, sure, but he isn’t gay. Or bisexual. No matter what Anthony says.
However, a late night and a frank conversation with his daughter’s best friend leaves Douglas with a different opinion. Not that he plans on letting Anthony know he considers it a date. It’s too much fun to wind Anthony up. After one not-so-perfect date, Douglas thinks maybe if he keeps Anthony around, turning fifty won’t be so bad.
REVIEW:

Douglas, a divorcee with a daughter comes into contact with Anthony at a coffee shop. Anthony is a lot younger than Douglas, yet he invites him on a β€˜date’. A term that is playfully argued about before and during the date, as Douglas is coming to grips with his attraction to Anthony. He’s encouraged to take a leap of faith by his 18-year-old daughter Jules and her gay-friend Steve. The first date ends up containing kisses and more. And a sweet early morning scene, where Douglas receives the approval of his daughter and an Anthony that might be there to stay.

A short story needs to be quick and succinctly, but the author should allow the reader to get connected to the main characters. Although this story is well-written, to me it lacked just that. For me there was no connection to either of the characters.
The premise of the story, keep an open mind about your own sexuality was a good one, and the way McCormick worked that into the story was well done. My only wish is that McCormick takes the time to write a full story about these characters, because I want to know why Anthony is attracted to Douglas.

  2. Oh no is that the last Daily Dose review πŸ™ Thank you for reviewing them and for given us very helpful feedback on the stories πŸ™‚ I do love the concept and storyline, as its something many of us can relate to, that you can find love no matter the gender of the other person, even though it takes a little push to make it happen in this story πŸ™‚ And my finally comment is that perhaps this is another one of those stories that might be extended at a future date πŸ˜€
