Sirens whooped in the distance, speeding toward us. I held a hand over Donovan’s mouth to keep him quiet and a fistful of his shirt to his bleeding shoulder. He cursed at me in a mad mash of words that didn’t have to make sense for me to understand him. A flesh wound, Kade had called it. Bled like a son of a bitch, he said. Sure enough that’s what it looked like Donovan’s wound was doing.

“I’ve been shot. I’ve been fucking shot,” Donovan muttered. At least I didn’t have to worry about him going into shock as long as he was still bitching.
