From strange rituals and runaway vampires, to fighting sorcerers and confronting a demon lord, this paranormal detective will face any challenge—even a dance with the devil.

REVIEW:

A paranormal detective in a magical world of ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. Chris, a half-ghost supernatural detective launches into one mystery after another. Since he’s the only paranormal detective in his area, his services are sought after, but he tends to go for cases where his pay is negligible. Luckily, he is the consort of a wealthy and handsome storm demon, Sable. The story begins with a case where a lust demon possesses a man and his X-girlfriend. The demon has also influenced a werewolf clan that is leaderless due to losing its alpha male. The story later jumps to a past case highlighting how Chris and Sable met and came together. The book finally ends with a murder mystery which revolves around a rare and valuable spell book.

Although the structure of this book confused me and I found myself lost on many occasions, I enjoyed the relationship between Chris and Sable. However, my confusion about the general plot, made rating this book difficult. Since I generally love Megan Derr’s writing, this book made me doubt whether I should be reading anything in the mystery genre at all. When I came to the end, I still had no idea what happened, so I started reading for a second time. After my second read through, I came to the conclusion that the book’s structure was lacking the element of suspense which is usually found in a mystery novel. Aside from the jumping between different cases, the characters in Dance with the Devil were appealing and the sex scenes very erotic. Since I think Megan Derr is great and this is one of her earlier works, I advise that anyone wanting to read her books for the first time start with another novel or series before reading this one.
