Kithric, an aging dragon tamer, leads a solitary life atop his mountain, until the day he accidentally traps a dragon that is more than he seems. Expecting to be killed for capturing a dragon shifter, Kithric instead finds himself spared and left to deal with his continued solitude.
He finds he can’t be rid of Ylfrin the dragon shifter that easily, though, and as Ylfrin continues to return, bit by bit Kithric begins to fall for him and starts to value using what life he has left to the fullest. But before he and Ylfrin can explore their feelings, they must first confront dangers and corrupt forces encroaching from outside Kithric’s Mountain.
Review:
When reviewing such a short story you have to be careful to not give too much away and so I always find it a particular challenge.
Kithric is the kind of character who breaks my heart . He’s lonely and pining for someone to love, but he expects to live the rest of his life….and die…alone. He has no friends or family to talk to or count on and exists solely to catch and release dragons, and gather things from them to sell.
Ylfrin is a dragon shifter who’s as lonely as Kithric and sees something in the man that fascinates him.
This was a wonderful story. The author’s writing style brought the characters and the environment they dwell in to life. She made me love these characters and care about what happened to them in only 30 pages and for me that’s a minor miracle.
The story perfectly portrays the theme of the anthology, never too late for love but it also reminds us that it’s never too late to stand up for your principles…or for someone.
Could I have read more of Kithric and Vlfrin? Yes of course! I would have loved to see where their adventures take them, but I have to admit, doesn’t “need” to go on from where it ends. The reader is given everything they need to imagine this unique couple’s future together…however long it may be.

Dragon tamer & dragon shifter? Oh yes! I love dragons!
Ohhh, a dragon tamer? I’ve only read one book before with one in it. Thank you for the review!
Thank you, your review is most helpful especially knowing that the story is quite complete and any thoughts about their future can be imagined by what is there.
I only had to read the word dragon, and already I was intrigued. Thanks for the review. 🙂
