TITLE: Lodestone
SERIES: Never Too Late (Daily Dose 2015)
AUTHOR: Terry Rissen
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 37 Pages
BLURB:
Alchemy “Al” Jones is an Earth Elemental with an affinity for metals. He uses his covert abilities doing freelance planetary mineral surveys. He’s spent decades as a loner, avoiding planets, Company drones, other Paras, and emotional entanglements. When he’s stranded on a station with a ship that needs more repairs than he has funds to cover, he’s got a decision to make. And then he meets Nick, who turns his world inside out.
Nicholai Royce is an Earth Elemental with an affinity for gems, and he’s on a mission. Paras are a maligned minority, and Nick’s in the sector to look over unclaimed planets that could be suitable for a Para home world. But he’s got a problem—his ship barely reached the station, and he doesn’t have the cash to get it out of dry dock. Then he meets Al, who is absolutely not the kind of person Nick should be falling for. On the other hand, Al’s scheme could get them back into space—or could get them killed.
A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2015 Daily Dose package “Never Too Late.”
REVIEW:
Reel me in, I’m firmly hooked! All I can say is this better be the introduction to a series about these guys! Terry Rissen has written a great little sci-fi story, which does a great job of pulling the reader in. The characters are believable and the story seems to firmly point into a continuation. It ends in what I would consider a cliff hanger, but one with a sort of “closure for now”. Does that make sense?
Alchemy Jones is an Earth Elemental with an affinity for metals. His last job went bad because the metal he found while doing a freelance planetary survey was mixed up with a bunch of gem stones, which made it hard for him to extract. He is now on a space station, with little cash and a ship that needs tons of repairs before he can leave.
Nick Royce is also an Earth Elemental, but with an affinity for gems. He is on a mission to find a new home world for the Paras. Only problem, he is on the same space station, also with a ship needing tons of repairs and not enough cash to cover them.
When the two meet, is there a way for them to solve each other’s problems? And what will happen when smoldering looks lead to the king of all kisses?
I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys sci-fi. I loved it, and I’m serious, this better damn well be the beginning of a new series, because I’ll be eagerly awaiting it. I love the dynamics between the two men. I can see it being a really fun to read series. I was kind of reminded of Brian Daley’s Hobart Floyt and Alacrity Fitzhugh characters, except for with gay guys!

I’m intrigued by the elemental earth caste. I’m looking forward to giving this a read. Thank you for the review.
I don’t read too much sci-fi but this looks cool!
Hi Dan, thank you for your review. I read a lot more fantasy, than sci-fi, but I like the mix of elemental and paranormal powers so I hope that when I get a chance to read this, that maybe a longer book or series is on the horizon?
