Blurb:
Wynn Brenwood has been trapped by his mother since birth, shut away in a sterile, hospital-like apartment. Is it her desire to keep him safe that sees him locked up in his pristine cage? Or are her motives less innocent and well-intentioned?
Wynn longs to break free to experience the world he sees beyond his window. Desperate to escape, he meets Doyle, a handsome, leather-clad, and enigmatic stranger. But is Doyle real, or is he just a figment of Wynn’s imagination?
Review:
Writing a review is sometimes harder than other times. I find myself at a loss for what to say and it’s my natural disposition to not want to hurt peoples feelings. I start reading every story with enthusiasm and high hope for an engaging and wonderful story.
The blurb for this was interesting. I like things that are different and I saw a lot of possibilities here. But none of them were realized.
Wynn is a lost man. His mother is powerful and controlling and needs to oversee every single aspect of his life. She doesn’t view him as her child, but merely a prized possession in need of hording.
To be honest, Wynn’s mother is the most fleshed-out character in this story. We are treated to her background in some kind of effort to understand why she feels the need to treat her son the way she does, but at best she comes across as mentally ill.
Doyle? Well he barely makes an appearance. He pops up in Wynn’s dreams and Wynn falls for him, but the fact that Wynn has never met anyone but the people his mother allows makes it hard to accept as a real connection and not just a desperate need to free himself from his mother’s prison.
Nothing felt finished in this story. When it ends we are left with tons of questions and no real answers. We never get an explanation as to how the two men are communicating. There’s no closure on Wynn and his mother. Are we just supposed to assume that she gave up once he was free? I have a hard time believing that and leaving us with that assumption doesn’t do anything for this story.
There’s not a lot to say about this book that won’t give the whole thing away. Most of it is spent following Wynn’s mother around and the parts that aren’t sex scenes between Wynn and Doyle.
And they are hot sex scenes. The writer draws a pretty picture of what goes on between them and that at least is a pleasure to read.
But for the most part, this story was a promise unfulfilled. I felt like I was given half a book and it left me frustrated more than anything.
