Reader Advisory: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series.
REVIEW: This is the second book in the Under Wolve’s series and I do recommend that it is read in order because there are references to other characters that were in the first book. Conley is an omega wolf with a few issues concerning his past. Having lived with a crazy father that abused him for most of his life, he barely escapes with his life when his father scars his face and tries to burn him alive. He joins with the War Council in order to discover who a traitor is and to find his missing mother and younger brother. While on the hunt for the mole in Alpha Gage’s camp he discovers the one complication that he didn’t need a mate. After acknowledging Jacob as his mate, Conley won’t be deterred from his mission of finding his family so he creates a diversion and runs from his mate vowing to see him again one day. Jacob a beta leader in Alpha Gage’s pack won’t let his mate leave him behind so after receiving permission from his Alpha he follows Conley in order to figure out what his mate is hiding. After a few weeks he finally stumbles upon his mate right as a vampire attacks him. But instead of stepping in he watches and finds that his mate is more than some weak omega. Realizing that Jacob won’t leave Conley decides that he should accept what fate gives him. But before they can claim each other they discover the local Alpha Carl has been working with vampires and they are within that vampire’s territory. This development shows what the vampires are really doing and what they have planned for the shifters and unfortunately Jacob and Conley are smack dab in the middle of things as they are led astray and captured. Then the question remains will they even be alive long enough to claim each other and will Conley ever find out if his family are alive or dead.
This was definitely a lot of action packed into this novella. Conley had a bit of past in that he had to deal with the fact his father abused him at every turn, and left him for dead with a wicked scar on his face. I think because of that scar he only saw himself good for working for the war council and finding his family. He didn’t think that he would find a mate or rather finding a mate was the last thing on his mind. I liked that he was brave and went against the whole omega standard of automatically being weak. He went head on with the vampires never backing down from his mission and the only time he showed even a hint of fear was when he was surrounded by stronger wolves. Jacob was definitely the best partner for Conley, definitely a romantic since he had been waiting for his true mate for quite some time and would not settle for anyone less than that. He made a good compliment to the very jaded Conley who didn’t see that much good in the world because of his past. Jacob had the humor and he appreciated the strength that Conley had and didn’t make him feel less because of his status as an omega. I really liked that it was just strictly romantic in that we had a few fight scenes and the underlying threat with the vampires and their plan for the shifters. It was definitely a good read and I recommend it for fellow readers of the author and of this particular series.
