REVIEW:
Rent Me is a sexy story about a dysfunctional couple fighting to hang on to their love. When I first started reading, I wasn’t sure what to think, but by the end I was hooked.
Twenty-one year old, Brennen, is in a failing relationship with a Russian mobster, Dmitri, who was at first his guardian and later became his lover. The story begins shortly after Dmitri marries a woman to appease his homophobic family in Russia. Dmitri swears to Brennen that he loves only him, but Brennen feels cast aside and cannot look past the slight. They used to sleep in the same bed, but following Dmitri’s wedding, Dmitri keeps Brennen in an apartment and only visits him on occasion. Though Dmitri pays for his apartment and college education, Brennen rebels against Dmitri and insists on working as a male escort. Throughout the book, Brennen struggles to gain his self-respect and some degree of independence. He wants to break up with Dmitri, but every possible escape is obscured by his desperate need for Dmitri’s love. While Brennen tries to come to terms with his failing relationship, he struggles with his job as a male escort, and learns more about who he is and what he wants in life.
I don’t usually read suspense or mafia novels, but I really loved all the danger and added tension in this romance. Being a male escort as well as the boyfriend of a Russian mobster are both potentially dangerous situations. So, I thought the story line and everything that happened to Brennen was very realistic. Brennen’s character was very likeable, but I was constantly undecided about whether to trust Dmitri. I like how Brennen copes with the abuse and mind games, while never giving up on his struggle to gain the love and respect he feels he deserves. For all the pain, suffering, and psychological trauma Brennen endures, I was very pleased with the emotional happy ending.
