Review:
I’m going to start off by saying that I usually love vampire books. I’m a fantasy/supernatural girl at heart and of course with vampires, there’s always that little bit of romantic seduction that you give in to almost against your will.
But sadly, this book just left me looking for something more.
Joel is a young man who has never realized that his families obsession with magic is more than just whimsy. His family is steeped in it and his parents also know all about vampires and other things that go bump in the night.
Vasile is a vampire who’s been looking for love for a long time. After being betrayed by a human in the past he’s sworn off relationships with them, but Joel proves impossible to resist.
François is Vasile’s friend and past lover who wants to protect him from everything, including himself and the human who could do so much damage to his friend’s heart.
This story had so much promise, but for me, it just failed to live up to any of it. Everything just seemed to happen with really no build up or anticipation. It felt mostly like the story was being told to you in a mono-tone, with no inflection, reducing it to a list of things that happened with no emotional attachment.
I didn’t realize that this was a second book in a series, but to be honest, I’m not sure that reading the first one would have made things any clearer for me. The only thing it might have cleared up was the strange relationship between Vasile and François.
I had a hard time buying that Joel really would get through life without any idea of the reality of his parents lives, considering how steeped in the supernatural they were.
When the showdown with the bad guys happens, it comes too quickly, and I think it would have much more sense if the author had taken the time to develop the relationship between Vasile and Joel a little more. I understand instant attraction and such, but Vasile’s attitude struck me as more “don’t touch my favorite toy” than “stay away from the love of my life”.
And the showdown seems stunted and boring after even the small amount of build-up that there was. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but the action had barely started when all of the sudden it was over and it left me wondering what in the hell had happened and where the rest of the fight went.
I’ve read other stories by this author that I loved a lot, so I’m just I’m just going to put this reading experience down to my tastes and the authors differing and look forward to the next book I find by them.
