Software billionaire Marc Julian’s orderly life is shattered one night by a cyber-intrusion into his company’s servers. He’s always surrounded himself with the best people, but finding the culprit behind this might require a real expert…and sometimes it takes a thief to catch a thief.
Jesse Winchester and his team of “grey hat” hackers are suddenly available to Marc. Marc doesn’t know if he should trust Jesse with the keys to his company’s kingdom. After all, Jesse’s a convicted felon, sent to prison for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. A felon sentenced to thirty-five years in prison, who mysteriously served only three years before being released…
Marc’s first company, his whole life, was shattered because he trusted the wrong person. This time there’s even more at stake, but few other options. Especially when his evil enemies, the billionaire industrialist Krom brothers, are revealed to be the source of the intrusion.
Is Jesse there to help Marc, or does he have his own history with the Kroms, his own score to settle? As Jesse and Marc spend more time together, their growing intimacy is at war with their need to win their respective battles. Soon the game they start to play with each other, against each other, becomes more exciting, more exquisitely frustrating…and more dangerous.

How did you do your research for Would I Lie to You?
I came into the story with a lot of information already. I’ve worked in high tech for a long time; I’ve had a PC ever since there was one (I know, I’m dating myself). I’m a big fan of the “true cybercrime” articles in WIRED magazine, and I actually have a friend who was quite the grifter in her day, so that was a resource! One great source was “Countdown to Zero Day,” a book about the Stuxnet virus – a computer virus created by the Americans and/or Israelis to destroy centrifuges in Iran’s nuclear facilities. I was amazed to discover how much damage you could do to physical plants, since almost all the machinery now is run by software. There’s a scene in “Would I Lie to You?” with a generator (I won’t say more) that came straight from one of the experiments that was conducted here in the US, to prove how vulnerable our infrastructure really is. A review called it “hinky” and improbable, but, I lifted it straight from this book. Reality is almost more dangerous now than fiction can imagine.
Can you tell us a little about the characters?
Marc is a brilliant, bipolar software genius, who’s built an empire out of talent and sheer will. He’s grown from a semi-Asperger’s type who doesn’t care about others, into a man who’s willing to put up a big chunk of his fortune to combat the evil right-wing Krom brothers in the political arena – and they’re not the type to keep the fight in that arena. He’s been burned, hard, emotionally and financially, and while he’s gotten really good at picking talented, trustworthy people to work for him, he really doubts his ability to do the same in his emotional life.
Jesse has grown up grifting and scamming, from his preteen years, when financial disaster forced him and his mom into “the game.” And he’s also a genius, who’s turned that genius into schemes so perfect that he and “Ma” never get caught. He tried to go straight or at least straightish when he got into MIT, but then he, too, hooked up with the wrong guy, to devastating consequences. That led to his prison term, where he became a very different man, a man with a consuming thirst for revenge, at all costs.
And there’s Ryan, a secondary character but a great one. He’s the dom/escort to whom Marc turns for his outlet – a safe place for a man who’s in control of everything all the time to let go, to be powerless. Ryan was meant to appear in the first scene and disappear forever, but he kept coming back into the story. And everyone who’s read the book loves him, me included!
Who did your cover? That photo is great!
Thanks! I do my own covers, based on stock photos. That’s Daniel Sobieray, he’s a model for my muse, Francesco Cura. Francesco’s been on innumerable book covers, including most of my own. Cura is the photographer as well as the model, which is a pretty amazing set of talents. It’s so hard to find decent stock photos, but when I look at the Curaphotography catalog, there’s always some fantastic pix of some amazing models. And I have plenty more of Daniel, so there’s no danger of running out before the series ends, whenever that may be!
Would you want to be the hacker or the billionaire? Why?
Hmm. The billionaire has the safety and security of all that money. Money solves a lot of problems, let’s face it. You never have to worry about your medical bills, for instance. But the hacker has a much more exciting life! Riskier, though. Of course, now that Marc and Jesse are a team, each will reap the benefit of the other’s situation. It should be a fun ride.
What are you working on next?
Ryan the escort’s standalone story, which is a linear, first person book. It’s about how he started escorting, how he got to be the guy he his, NYC’s most successful dom, and also a compassionate person, a good and loyal friend to Marc. And of course I have him idly mention near the end of “Lie” that he may be in love himself, so…we’ll see where that leads!
Then it’ll be the next Marc and Jesse adventure, once I’m sure I have something that will be as good as the first one. Marc and Jesse have really just made their opening moves in the “Game Players” series, and they still have a long game in front of them…
He’d made a mistake with Marc. He’d thought they could play a game together, to pass the time, let off steam, release stress. Marc was smart enough to know that that’s all it was.
Right?
But the look on his face, when Jesse said goodbye… The shock. The disappointment. The…
Say it. The hurt. That was when Jesse knew that for Marc, it had been more.
That was when Jesse knew that it had been more for him, too.
