After his move to Atlanta and away from the influence of his conservative parents, Mikey O’Malley finally feels free to be himself: art student, aspiring animator, and out gay man. He has friends, a new job, and not one, but two men interested in him. Cory Lassiter and Jimmy Black have been a happy couple for years, occasionally bringing a twink into their bed, but only for a brief roll in the hay. When Mikey meets the pair, the attraction is immediate, and it runs three ways. Mikey just can’t believe they’d have room in their lives for a permanent addition.
When Mikey’s newfound life is shattered by a lawsuit that accuses him of molesting a child years earlier, he’s determined to face his troubles on his own, but Cory and Jimmy are just as determined that he not have to go it alone. To reconcile his need for independence and his desire for love, Mikey has to learn that being a man isn’t just about standing on your own two feet. It’s about letting yourself lean on the ones who love you.
Review:
As someone who was a huge fan of the first book in this series, I was dying to get my hands on this one and for good reason.
Wayward Son tells the story of Mikey, whom we met briefly in the first book. He’s a young man who’s finally coming into his own after getting away from his religious parents who couldn’t accept that he was gay.
Falling for Mikey is easy. He’s sweet and has a good heart. He’s determined to prove to everyone whoever doubt him that he can take care of himself and part of the appeal of this book is watching as he realizes that you can be independent and self-reliant and still accept the help of people who care about you.
Cory and Jimmy are a wonderful couple who continually made me smile. They have big, bold personalities but seem to know instinctively when Mikey needs a little quiet and sweetness to help him feel better. Their determination to show Mikey that there is room for him in their lives and in their hearts is wonderfully endearing.
The flow of this story is perfect. I never felt like it was dragging and once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. It just pulls you along, mixing the story with scenes of smoking hot sex that somehow manages to be tender and loving at the same time.
We also get small glimpses of the characters from the first book, but basically they are just background to be built on that leaves the focus on the story at hand.
Mikey did frustrate the hell out of me at times. His determination to do everything on his own when he had people willing to support him goes from endearing to “I wanna smack you” about halfway through the book, but when you consider his background it’s also understandable.
When his parents made their appearance in the story, I got angry all over again. Children are meant to be loved by their parents for who they are, not who their parents want them to be. Mikey (and all children) deserves better.
What happens to Mikey is scary and it made me so angry, but in the end, it’s part of his journey and it helps him to finally understand that having people to rely on doesn’t always mean giving up your independence.
The chemistry between the characters is wonderful. I never felt like one overwhelmed the other and instead, they all seem to bring out the best in each other. From the beginning there was a family dynamic that never seemed forced or contrived. They just fit.
I know I’m supposed to find something to critique but there’s honestly just nothing that I can think of worth complaining about. This story has all elements I look for in a good read and none of the things that tend to drive me crazy.
I’ve been a big fan of Shae Connor since the beginning and this series is only cementing my appreciation for her. I can’t wait for what comes next!
