“You’re not real. Felix Ingesson is dead.”
The war with the alien stin is over, but Felix Ingesson has given up on seeing his lover, Zander Anatolius, ever again. Zander’s military file is sealed tighter than an airlock. A former prisoner of war, Felix is attempting a much quieter life keeping his ship, the Chaos, aloft. He almost succeeds, until Zander walks on board and insists that Felix isn’t real.
A retired, broken super soldier, Zander is reeling from the aftereffects of his experimental training and wants nothing more than to disappear and wait for insanity to claim him. Then he sees footage of a friend and ally—a super soldier like him—murdering an entire security squad with her bare hands and a cold, dead look in her eyes. He never expected to find Felix, the man he’d thought dead for years, on the ship he hired to track her down.
Working with Felix to rescue his teammate is a dream come true…and a nightmare. Zander has no exit strategy that will leave Felix unscathed, or his own heart unbroken.
REVIEW:
I enjoyed Chaos Station. It is a great start to a new series by the authors and I picked it up to read and review in preparation for reviewing book two, Lonely Shore which is coming out this month.
Zander, or Zed, or as he wants to be called, Loop, is an ex-soldier. The intergalactic war against the Stin was crippling to the humans, but the Guardians, an all powerful race, moved in and forced a cease fire six months previously. Unfortunately, before it ended, Zed and his friend Emma were subjected to an experimental drug training to make them super soldiers. Zed has withdrawn and remained away from everyone for six months, fearing that the drug treatment will eventually cause him to go insane. Emma seems to bear out his fears, as she has committed a multiple murder on a space station, and gone into hiding somewhere on the station. Zed realizes he can no longer stay hidden and he must go and rescue her.
He meets the captain of a pretty beat up spaceship, with a proposition. Take him to rescue his friend who has gotten into some major trouble. Galaxy-wide news worthy trouble. He offers 400,000 credits for the trip, something the Chaos really needs for some major updates.
A snag is hit though when they get to the ship, and discover Zed’s former lover Felix, who was reported dead during the war, is alive and well after having escaped from the prison camp where he was held. There is some drama, and Zed is almost tossed off the ship, but Felix pleads his case and the ship’s crew agrees to accept the contract.
They begin a trip across space to the space station where Emma is missing. Will they get there in time to rescue their friend? What of the former relationship between Zed and Felix?
This is the first book I’ve read by these authors and I felt they did a good job developing a science fiction work which, while focused on the relationship between two men, at the same time had a very well developed cast of characters, and background story. The storyline was well developed and well written, and the book was very well edited.
I liked this book a lot and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good sci-fi story. I’ll be looking forward to reading book two later this month!
