Will Osborne couldn’t wait to put the roller coaster ride of his public education behind him. Having suffered bullying and harassment since grade school, he planned a senior year that would be simple and quiet before going away to college and starting fresh. But when a reform school transfer student struts into his first class, Will realizes that the thrill ride has only just begun.

Lennox McAvoy is an avalanche. He’s crude, flirtatious, and the most insufferable, beautiful person Will’s ever met. From his ankle monitor to his dull smile, Lennox appears irredeemable. But when Will’s father falls seriously ill, Will discovers that there is more to Lennox than meets the eye.

Would you like to tell us a little about Go Your Own Way?

Go Your Own Way is a story about finding your way in the world and finding someone to share yourself with. The two main boys, Will and Lennox, both have their own expectations of what their lives are right now and what they are going to be for the next several years.

Will is looking at colleges, thinking about this time next year when he’ll be off on his own and finding young men like himself he can date outside of his small town. He’s had a simple life, a good one for the most part, whereas Lennox’s life is one difficult moment after another.

Lennox has been in and out of trouble since childhood. A lot landed on his plate at a young age when his mother died and he struggles to handle it and to handle the problems he finds at school because he’s gay. Eventually, he ends up in a juvenile detention center and then a boarding school when his father dies and his grandfather gains custody of the siblings.

The novel begins with Lennox being brought to Leon, and follows the pair as they figure each other and fall in love.

How long have you been writing?

It’s been about five years now. I wrote before that—I’ve been finding a lot of old Star Wars and Goosebumps stories I began in elementary school recently—but until college I never sat down and really tried to write a full story. Writing was always something I liked to do, but I never finished anything I started. I didn’t think it was something I could actually do outside of my own notebooks. That was a rather silly thought since I was reading actual books, but as a kid I never thought someone like myself could do that. I always pictured it like a high school dance with the people standing off to the side. A few get asked to dance by somebody, but a lot of them only hang out on the sidelines and watch instead of being published.

What authors do you like to read?

Douglas Adams, J.K. Rowling,  and R.L. Stine is an old favorite… I’m definitely more of a genre or series reader than specific authors. If the story is good and interesting, then I’m all in. I’ve got a fascination with particular time periods, too. I’ll read anything related to World War II or ancient China. Although one author I’ve been reading lately is Markus Zusak who wrote The Book Thief. That novel blew me away, both with the choice of narrator and the use of color through that perspective. It’s definitely a book I’ll come back to over and over.

What is the number one thing on your bucket list? Why?

Number one is currently to get a passport so I can complete the rest of my list. I want to see the world, go on trips to new places, meet new people, and to see what else is out there beyond the borders of the United States. It’s really important to me to see and appreciate how massive the cultures of the world are outside of my own.

Can you share something about your work in progress?

Right now I’m working on a sequel to Go Your Own Way and a few other ideas I’ve had floating around. I’m about halfway through the sequel, which I’m very excited about. The other stories—right now there’s two—have transgender protagonists.  Once I finish Go Your Own Way my focus will turn to one of those stories because I really want to expand the characters I write about. I don’t want to stick with one sexuality or gender or race or anything else. Representing more people, and representing them well, is important to me and people reading my works.

love bytes excerpt

Lennox leaned forward until Will could smell the peppermint on his breath and the smoke on his clothes. He shivered again and tried to make himself back away. But his body didn’t seem to want to cooperate any more than Lennox. Will met his eyes—could see himself reflected in them. They looked like a pair of pennies, bright and bronze as if they were sitting in a shallow, sunlit fountain. It was a beauty Will didn’t want to think about.

“You don’t have to tease so much,” Lennox whispered. That smile stayed on his face, and Will had to look away. His eyes fell on his hands gripping his chair and the white knuckles under his skin. If he looked in those eyes again, he would do something stupid. Like slap Lennox—or kiss him.
