BLURB:
Love doesn’t come with a syllabus. Kelly Davidson has waited what seems like forever to graduate high school and get out of his small-minded, small town. But when he arrives at Hope University, he quickly realizes finding his Prince Charming isn’t so easy. Everyone here is already out. In fact, Kelly could be the only virgin on campus. Worst of all, he’s landed the charming, handsome, gay campus Casanova as a roommate, whose bed might as well be equipped with a revolving door.
Walter Lucas doesn’t believe in storybook love. Everyone is better off having as much fun as possible with as many people as possible – except his shy, sad little sack of a roommate is seriously screwing up his world view. As Walter sets out to lure Kelly out of his shell, staying just friends is harder than he anticipated. He discovers love is a crash course in determination. To make the grade, he’ll have to finally show up for class – and overcome his own private fear that love was never meant to last. Warning: This story contains lingering glances, milder than usual sexual content for this author, and a steamy dance-floor kiss. Story has no dairy or egg content, but may contain almonds.
REVIEW:
Well, I have to say that I had been flirting with buying this book on Audible for a couple of weeks before I this came up for review and I thought…Hey this is meant to be!! You’ve wanted to buy this book and see what all the hype is about and now…here’s your chance!
Walter Lucas, wow…I really liked this character. Lucas is a cynical young man whose life hasn’t been the greatest. His father divorced his wife and his family. His mother hasn’t taken that well at all even though it’s still been a couple of years. Walter goes to this really expensive college, Hope College that even dislikes having students live off campus. Walter lived off campus the prior year and even got approval to live off this year, however, that didn’t work out and now he’s back to living in the dorms in Porter House, the dorm that he lived in his freshman year. This time, he’s living with a freshman, Kelly Davidson who is allergic to just about EVERYTHING!!
Walter has this abandonment issue that stems from his father and even his mother as she’s now become the child and Walter the adult. Kara, his best friend, graduates college and moves on with her life, getting the job and getting married. Professor Williams, who is Walter’s advisor for his communication degree. Professor Williams is like an older brother that spends time with Walter and allows him to truly express himself and talk about the things that are going on in his life. This is something that Walter is going to have to deal with through the course of this book and it was really great to see him grow as a person.
Kelly Davidson, this poor kid. Kelly has allergies to just about everything and I felt so bad for him. To know that for his entire life thus far, Kelly has had this HUGE ordeal with what to eat, drink and his living conditions that he’s not really had the life of a regular child/young man. Kelly has been hoping to have this grand adventure in college. He’s newly out as gay and is hoping to meet others and be a part of a community. Kelly has this really sweet obsession with Disney movies and fairytale love. I love the fact that Kelly is just so damn sweet and kind and so very gentle. Kelly has some growing up to do in this freshman year. Watching Kelly grow as a young man was just about the most beautiful, sweetest thing.
The secondary characters in this book really helped our MC’s. They loved, supported and helped them with wonderful advice along the way. There were also some who put added stress on our MC’s, like Walter’s mother and his maternal grandmother. However, as we all know, that is just a part of life. We all have those family members or people in our lives that we just want to put I an cannon and just blasted out of our lives.
I will say that I really liked the fact that this story really didn’t revolve around sex. These are young men, so we know that they are thinking and talking about it, however, it takes them a while to get there with each other. This was a wonderful slow burn book that really ignited your heart before you loins. These two young men are friends first and then become lovers and that made this book all the sweeter.
The Narrator, Iggy Toma did such an amazing job with the voices of not only our MC’s but everyone in the story. He even did a great job on the female voices. He made each character so distinct that I was never confused as to who was “speaking”.
I have to say that I’m so glad that I got the chance to listen to this audiobook version of this book. It was worth spending a Sunday listening to this sweet, lovable, feel good story.
