Sometimes you have to play love by ear.
Aaron Seavers is a pathetic mess, and he knows it. He lives in terror of incurring his father’s wrath and disappointing his mother, and he can’t stop dithering about where to go to college – with fall term only weeks away. Ditched by a friend at a miserable summer farewell party, all he can do is get drunk in the laundry room and regret he was ever born. Until a geeky-cute classmate lifts his spirits, leaving him confident of two things: his sexual orientation and where he’s headed to school.
Giles Mulder can’t wait to get the hell out of Oak Grove, Minnesota, and off to college, where he plans to play his violin and figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. But when Aaron appears on campus, memories of hometown hazing threaten what he’d hoped would be his haven. As the semester wears on, their attraction crescendos from double cautious to a rich, swelling chord. But if more than one set of controlling parents have their way, the music of their love could come to a shattering end.
Warning: Contains showmances, bad parenting, Walter Lucas, and a cappella.
REVIEW:
So, this audiobook was AMAZING!! I had been going back and forth debating buying these books and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to review them and I’m so freaking glad that I did!!
Aaron Seavers isn’t what everyone thinks he is. Aaron is this really sweet, loving , kind young man whose life is music. Aaron is just about the sweetest guy that I’ve seen in a book. Aaron has family issues that stem from his father, a high-powered attorney who is just about the BIGGEST JERK in the whole wide world. His mother is a weak woman who allows her ex-husband to still control her life and isn’t there for her son. Aaron was waffling as to where to go to college until the night of his 18th Birthday where at a party he meets, Giles Mulder. Giles really put things in perspective for Aaron and helps him get a better feel of who he is. Aaron’s growth during this book was Outstanding and I was happy to be along on the ride.
Giles Mulder is the out young man who has gone through so much from the people in his hometown. The gay-bashing that he’s endured from his fellow students is totally uncalled for. The trips to the hospital and the way that some of those guys who’d sleep with him and then turn around and bully him…hateful and so damn hurtful. It has led Giles to be suspicious and mistrustful. I can truly understand where he’s coming from. Giles is this great guy who is so filled with doubt that it hurt to be in his head. Giles however has this wonderful family that loves and truly supports him. I enjoyed seeing Giles grow up as well during the course of this book. Giles has a love of music as well and it was really great to see him bond with Aaron over music as well as becoming romantic.
Walter Lucas, from Love Lessons plays pretty heavily in this book and I swear, I loved him before and here…you got even more into who he is and I just about want to crawl into his skin and just live there forever!! Kelly is of course, featured as Walter’s significant other. I still think Kelly is just the most adorable guy EVER!! You get to see Baz and the choral gang, whom are very close to Aaron as well as Elijiah Prince, who is Aaron’s roommate in the dorms. These two feature pretty heavily in this story and I’m so excited that their book comes out in August. You meet Mr and Mrs Moulder, Giles’ parents. These two remind me of Kelly’s folks. Just good, kind people who know that loving your child is one of the greatest gifts in this life. That you support them and love them and let them grow up and flourish under your loving care. Aaron’s parents are ABSOLUTLEY the WORST PARENTS!! From the moment they came on screen…I hated them and that didn’t get any better as time wore on. If fact, I wanted to reach through the screen and choke them, I disliked them so much. I totally understand that these things happen everyday to real people and to know that this happens, it just breaks my heart. Aaron however was really lucky with the support system that he has.
For me, this book started off pretty slow and I felt every one of the hours that was happening drag on and on, however, the second half of this book….WATCH THE HELL OUT!! All of a sudden this book picked up speed and it got off the hook Good. However, I know that the first part had to happen, you had to see what these guys were going thru and be able to watch them learn and grow. I fell so in love with these characters, ALL OF THEM, with the exception of Aaron and Elijih’s folks that is. This book had my emotions all over the place and it took me two days of reading other books before I could get my emotions under control enough to write this review.
Iggy Toma does ANOTHER OUTSTANDING job of narrating this book. He has this amazing voice that embodied each character and I was never confused as to who was talking at any point. I loved that Iggy just seemed to give this book his all and it showed. I’ve not listened to any other story that Iggy has done, however, if I see his name on any other audiobook, I will definitely know that the narration will be AMAZING!!
This audiobook was well worth the almost 12 hours that listened. You go through the angst, love, pain, etc. with all of the characters and you come out a better person for it. I am so invested in these books now that I saw that the third book comes out in August and I’ve pre-ordered it. I’m just so intrigued as to how Baz and Elijiah get things going.
