About Down

Seven thousand meters below the ocean’s surface, the crew of the BathyTech 3 mineral mining facility has found something remarkable: a rock-like sphere of unknown material and origin.

For Mo Rees, the discovery calls to his inner explorer and adds color to his dull miner’s life. Even better than the promise of new knowledge is the unexpected connection he forges with Dr. Armin Savage-Hall, leader of the team brought down to study the thing.

For Armin, the object is the find of a lifetime. It could prove his controversial theories and secure his scientific reputation. And Mo is a fascinating bonus.

Then crew members start behaving strangely. Worse, they start to change: their eyes glow purple, their teeth sharpen. Then the violence begins, the brutal deaths. As BathyTech descends deeper into chaos, the surviving crew works desperately to find the cause of the horrors around them. What they uncover could annihilate the human race. And they can’t stop it.

Lovebytes guestpost

Hi everyone! I’m excited to be here at Love Bytes today as part of my blog tour for my horror novel, Down. Thank you so much for having me!

Anyone who’s been following the tour thus far may have already seen that this book is set about one hundred years in the future. I like writing futuristic tales. They let me pretty much make up what I want when it comes to society and technology. That sort of freedom is nice. For Down, I didn’t go into a lot of detail as far as sociological changes. I hinted at a couple of major events in the world, and I try to show through my characters and their interactions that this future world is far better than our current one when it comes to true equality for women, the GLBTQ community, and non-whites. I have to admit that I tend to go that route in my futuristic stories. I much prefer an imaginary equal world to an imaginary unequal one. Same goes for the real world, but sadly, I don’t get to shape the real world. My own world? I can make it what I want. So I do.

In Down, there’s a lot more focus on my imaginary future technology. Obviously, if you’re going to have a whole crew of people living and working at the bottom of the ocean, you need the tech to support that. So my future world has it. That was SO fun to make up! Of course there’s the BathyTech deep sea pod that they all live in, with a communication system each person can personalize via an access port at their quarters, and water purification, food synthesis, air recycling and purification, etc. I didn’t try to puzzle out precisely how all that works. It’s the future, they made it work! They also have what they call go carts, which are like submarine ATVs. The crew use them to “drive” from the pod to the deep sea vents where the mineral mining arrays are set up. Then they put on “walkers”—deep sea dive suits, only in this future they are light and flexible, with information displays on the helmet—to move around in the water.

There’s more, of course. Special weapons, futuristic lab technology, a “wet” deep diving gas mix called Mist. All of it basically takes things that exist now and says What If. To me, that’s one of the best things about being a writer—the What If. I loved creating this world. I hope y’all love reading it

Ally Blue is acknowledged by the world at large (or at least by her heroes, who tend to suffer a lot) as the Popess of Gay Angst.

She has a great big suggestively-shaped hat and rides in a bullet-proof Plexiglas bubble in Christmas parades. Her harem of manwhores does double duty as bodyguards and inspirational entertainment. Her favorite band is Radiohead, her favorite color is lime green and her favorite way to waste a perfectly good Saturday is to watch all three extended version LOTR movies in a row.

Her ultimate dream is to one day ditch the evil day job and support the family on manlove alone. She is not a hippie or a brain surgeon, no matter what her kids’ friends say.
