Blurb
Lucas Wilder’s best friend is a traitor. First, Audrey moved back to their hick-infested hometown, Bluewater Bay, and now she’s marrying a local. His own brother, in fact. And as her man of honor, Lucas gets coerced into returning for an extended stay. Although, between his unfaithful ex-boyfriend and his artist’s block, going home isn’t the worst thing that could happen. Even if the best man is Gabriel Savage, Lucas’s first crush, first hookup, and first heartbreak.
The only reason Gabe hasn’t been waiting for Lucas to return to Bluewater Bay is because he never thought it’d happen. Not that it matters now that Lucas is back—Gabe’s still a logger who’s never been anywhere (Canada doesn’t count), and Lucas is now a famous sculptor who’s been everywhere twice. Plus, there’s that shared past.
When Audrey asks Lucas to make her wedding favors, the only place to set up a kiln is at Gabe’s tree farm. Soon, they pick up where they left off twelve years before, then blow past it, discovering why neither of them forgot the other. Now they have to choose how much of their history they’ll repeat, and what future they’ll make together.
In town, the rain was letting up, or maybe it was just coming down harder at the farm. It was barely a sprinkle when Gabe pulled up across from Audrey’s shop. He got lucky—there were two adjacent parking spots, so he could fit. Lucas appeared before he could shut off the motor, running across the street and around the front of his truck.
“Whew,” he said as soon as he’d pulled open the passenger door. “I lived in Southern California too long. This almost seems like real rain.”
“You got a tan, though. Fair trade-off.” He meant it as a joke, of course, but the way Lucas climbed into his seat and buckled his belt was a little too stiff and a little too silent.
Apparently, Gabe had to pretend he didn’t notice any of the physical changes in the guy. But he did. Hair not as dark, muscles lean and sleek, no longer on the stringy side . . . He could sit here the next ten minutes and catalog them. Now, there’s a shitty idea.
“What’s with the trailer?” Lucas was arranging a messenger bag on the floor, but it didn’t look so much like avoidance. More like it was necessary or he wouldn’t have any legroom.
“I’m going to see a man about a horse,” Gabe answered, putting the transmission in gear.
This time, Lucas laughed. “Seriously? You have three already.”
“Well, Laura Haakinson—you remember her? Used to be Laura Larson, Seth’s cousin. Anyway, she became a veterinarian, and she’s got the care of most of the livestock around these parts. She found this stallion she thinks I need, and I don’t think she’s going to leave me alone about it until I at least take a look.” He turned left onto Main, just barely making it past some fancy Jaguar parked too damn far from the curb. Those Hollywood types didn’t understand the first thing about etiquette in a small town. Like not blocking the street in case someone came through with a long load. “Place sure has changed since you lived here.”
“It’s crazy. Every time I walk around town or go out to eat, I see something I never thought I’d see here. Like Levi Pritchard walking down the street holding hands with that other guy. He’s an actor, too, but I can never remember their names.”
“Mmm, Carter Samuels. He’s the hot one.” Gabe leered at the road because they were going around the S curves on the east end of town and he had to keep his eyes on it.
“No.” Lucas snorted. “Levi Pritchard is the hot one.”
“It’s prolly a toss-up.”
“Never thought this would happen.”
“What?” Taking a quick glance, he found Lucas looking at him, face very serious. “The town changing like this?”
“That, but more I never thought I’d be talking about hot guys with you.”
Shit. “You know, Lu,” Gabe began in his most conversational tone. “I think if we’re gonna put the past behind us, we should maybe stop bringing it up.”
He kept his focus solely on the highway for the next few silent seconds. They passed the urgent care clinic, and the tires were really humming on the wet pavement before Lucas said, “You’re right. Except . . .”
Please, not one more thing he can blame me for. “Yeah?”
“You can still fill me in on all the dirt that’s happened in the last twelve years. I mean, the gossip Mom wouldn’t know.”
Phew. “I can do that.” Just telling him who all had married and divorced and slept with someone else’s spouse would keep them in conversation until they hit Port Angeles.
