REVIEW:
Dr. Micah Steinberg is a Neurologist at a busy Manhattan hospital. He has his life under tight control, is up for a promotion to the head of his department at the hospital, and has no time for people! This includes his family. The only one he is close to is his grandmother, and he only sees her once a year on Valentine’s Day.
Josh Rosen first sees him one day when he comes in the coffee shop where Josh is working and is a total asshole to the staff, including Josh. When Josh mutters something about him being an asshole, he makes eye contact, but then arrogantly takes his coffee and leaves.
Josh has had enough of “assholes”. His former boyfriend, who was also his business partner, thought that monogamy meant not getting caught. When Josh came home early one day and found him in bed with the neighbor, their relationship was over and Josh moved from Boston back to NYC to be close to his grandmother. When he did, he gave up being a highly successful employment law attorney and went to work temporarily for his ex’s sister at her coffee shop.
Micah arrives at his office after having downed his quadruple espresso and finds a letter from some old lady at the upscale home where he placed his grandmother. The little old lady who wrote the letter lays into Micah for ignoring his sweet grandmother and only coming by for a ten minute visit once a year! Being the control freak he is, he leaves the hospital immediately headed for the home to give a piece of his mind to this old lady…who does she think she is anyway? He also vows to let the staff of the home know about his lady’s misdeeds!
Turns out the little old lady is Josh’s grandmother and she and Micah’s grandmother are dear friends at the home. Sparks will fly when the two men run into each other at the home…but is there more than just animosity?
Micah reminded me of my own neurosurgeon and neurologist, both of whom come across as quite cold and arrogant and seem to have zero people skills. Honestly, that seems to be the norm in neurology in my opinion, so Micah didn’t seem far off the norm! But we learn as the book moves along that there are reasons for Micah’s actions. Inside, Micah has been broken by his upbringing and the lack of love from his parents. Josh is broken as well, by the distrust of relationships caused by his ex. Ms. Stevens takes on a journey of discovery by both men. With the help of a stray dog, named Lucky, do they have a chance of a happily ever after?
I really enjoy the authors writing style. This is the second book I’ve read from her and I highly enjoyed them both. I recommend you give this one a try.
