Their relationship is on the rocks after insecurity and fear drove a wedge between them in San Francisco, and David is determined to make things right. Yet if they thought navigating “English” life was confusing, being back in Zebulon is even more complicated.
Their families are desperate to bring them back into the fold, and pressure from the community builds. Isaac and David yearn for a future together, but each day it becomes harder to hide the truth about who they really are. They’re caught between two worlds, and if they’re not careful it could tear them further apart.
Can Isaac and David make their way back to each other—and find a place to call home?
This is the final chapter in a trilogy of forbidden Amish love.
REVIEW:
This is the third and final book in Keira Andrew’s Gay Amish Romance series. I LOVED the first one, I liked the second one, and I LOVED this one!
Briefly, David and Isaac are young Amish men, they lived in a settlement called Zebulon, a very restrictive Amish community. The fell in love in book one, with lots of angst and drama. It ended with them running away and taking a bus from Minnesota to San Francisco to live with Aaron, Isaac older brother. The second book was about them settling in to their English life, and how difficult it was to adapt. Isaac settled down pretty quickly and easily, but David not so much. At the end of book two, David and Isaac are not in a good place in their relationship, when Isaac gets a call telling him his younger brother Nathan has cancer and a bone marrow transplant may help him. Isaac can’t find David and they just head out to fly to Minnesota to get tested to see if they are a match. Isaac leaves a note for David.
This book picks up with Aaron and Isaac arriving in Minnesota. Aaron left the family ten years before, after joining the church, so he was shunned. No one will speak to him or take anything from his had. But still he goes to his family when they need him. Aaron and Isaac get to the hospital and face the family. No one knew why Isaac and David left, just that they did and it was wrong. There is much angst and confrontation with Isaac’s family, his parents won’t let him see his younger siblings unless he stays with them, wearing his old Amish clothing. He agrees, and a very uncomfortable evening follows, as Isaac realizes just how far from the Amish way he has moved. Aaron is basically ignored by the family, and stays with June, a friend that helped David and Isaac leave.
David gets Isaac’s note, and with the help of Jen, Aaron’s wife, takes his first plane trip to Minnesota. June picks him up at the airport, and off they go to get embroiled in the family drama. Not only Isaac’s family drama, but his own family as well. David’s brother died some years before, followed by their father. David has been the head of his household, his mother and a bunch of sisters looking to him for support and care. He has left them all behind. Another older Amish man married David’s mother and moved her and the daughters in to his house. David must face his family as well. Of course much drama ensues with him as well!
Isaac and Aaron are tested to see if either will be a match for Nathan. The whole business is just a mess. The phrase “it’s God’s will” is used a lot, there is a big discussion about whether they’ll even treat poor Nathan. Both men are pressured by their families and friends to come back to the church. One of their sisters is literally in tears thinking her brother is going to go to hell. They are so blindly faithful that no other option exists. It’s the church or nothing. David and Isaac are approached by the leaders of their community, pressured, and nearly physically threatened. Lots of tears and angst. I loved it! That sounds so bad, but I did! I won’t give any more away, I’ll just say the ending was exactly what I wanted. And wasn’t perfect for the characters, no one got everything they wanted, as is realistic. Dancing around saying too much here…. there was a lot of good, but as it true to life, it wasn’t perfect. Hope that makes sense!
I have to say I am very happy with this book. I didn’t love David in the last one. He got too whiny and it didn’t work for me as well as the first book did. I could see why he was so stressed, but something about it just didn’t work for me. I liked the book, but not what happened with him. This book is more like the first, more drama and action, not in the gun fight, chase scene way, but more happened. The families were involved, there was just more too this book. I loved it! Keira’s writing is fantastic, her understanding of this community spot on. At least I assume it is, it felt like it! Her characters are great, well-developed after three books, and we saw all of them in this book. I liked the plot, it was nice and dramatic, and wasn’t easy or perfect for the characters. It seemed realistic to me. I can see this drama happening. There were a couple of good sex scenes between David and Aaron, reunion sex is awesome! There was just a hint that David may like to be held down a bit…. Sweet and sexy! The ending was excellent. I liked that in some ways it wasn’t perfect, David and Isaac get most of what they want but not all of it. It was a good ending to the series, I am glad Keira ended this series at this point and didn’t drag it out.
I’m sorry to see it end but this was where it should end. If you liked the other books, you’ll love this one. If you haven’t read them you REALLY need to!
