LENGTH: 39 pages
BLURB:
Determined to escape an arranged marriage, and with very few options available, Danna brings a curse down on herself and settles into life in an enchanted tower. The very last thing she needs or wants is to be rescued, no matter how beautiful or compelling her unexpected rescuer is.
Nobelle is desperate to avoid the hangman’s noose, and as last ditch efforts go her life could be worse than rescuing a bratty princess. But an easy way to stay alive turns into a complicated tangle of lies as she and Danna grow closer and Nobelle has no easy way to admit that she’s no knight in shining armor…
REVIEW:
Nobelle’s life has been anything but pretty, but that doesn’t mean that she is ready for it to end any time soon. So when she hears that the prize for rescuing Princess Danna out of her tower prison is marriage into the royal family, Nobelle thinks she has found a way out of her dilemma. They wouldn’t condemn the princess’s wife, surely? Unfortunately the poisonous briar, deadly harpies, and magic fire are not Nobelle’s real problem. No, her problems all come down to Danna and her unflinching belief that true love will save her from her curse. Which, in Nobelle’s opinion, is just plain daft.
This story started off really well. I loved the interaction between the two characters, and the fact that Nobelle was not automatically struck with ‘true love’ the moment she saw Danna was very nice. It made for a nice twist on this fairytale story.
And if there had been a bit more of the story I think I would have ended up loving it. The basics were all there, and I certainly enjoyed the characters, but things felt incredibly rushed. I love that the love was not at first sight, but had a hard time believing it came at 15th, either. Mostly because the story was so rushed that we never got to see much of the journey from 1st to 15th.
Which also probably was my problem with the the problem in this story. Nobelle tells Danna that she is no knight within seconds of meeting her, and yet Danna acts flabbergasted when Nobelle tells her secret. Because we never really get to see the relationship build up, it just seemed over the top. Maybe the issue there though was just that the story pov was skewed more towards Nobelle so we don’t really understand Danna and her personality at all.
If the last half of the story had stayed as fun as the first half, I think I could have ended up really loving this book. As it was, it was nice. Nobelle and Danna were interesting characters, and I really enjoyed seeing them interact, so it wasn’t a hardship to read this. Just a bit rushed at times.
