Vegas is filled with human cast-offs, yet officer Parker McLean sees something special in hustler Slade Wolfgang. Unfortunately, so does Slade’s pimp who wants to sell him overseas in the sex trade.
Hustler Slade Wolfgang has little choice over his fate. At the age of twenty, he’s had to survive any way he can since“thrown out of his home for being gay. As soon as he hit Vegas, Slade was lured into the hopeless world of prostitution where he’s become a virtual prisoner to his pimp, the ruthless Julio Estevez. His evil keeper has even threatened to sell Slade overseas as a sex slave.
It’s another typical night on the Strip when Parker comes across Slade. His heart breaks every time he sees someone so young being exploited. Something in Slade’s eyes tells Parker the young man might be in real trouble though—especially after the recent spate of sex worker killings from a rival prostitution ring.
The two men’s lives become intertwined when Slade is almost beaten to death. The danger grows, but so does the relationship between Parker and Slade. Parker helps Slade to heal from the horrific attack and their bond deepens. But the human traffickers are still out there—and they’re still looking for Slade.
REVIEW:
This is the second book in her Sin City Uniforms which may be a spin off from her Uniform Encounters series. I have yet to find any crossover characters from Encounters in this series. This is only book two, but it is a really good start to this new series.
This book is a bit darker than her others in that it tackles the seedy world of human trafficking and prostitution. Here, you have a young man, Slade aka Lonnie Henderson was a young man who, through no fault of his own, and like many other young people, was disowned by his family and forced out of his home for being gay. Left with no other options, he was forced into this line of work to survive. His character simply broke my heart because it’s a story that’s all too real for thousands–possibly more–of abused and LGBT youth.
Parker is a type of cop that truly wants to help people; he actually cares what happens to the people he arrests. He sees something special in Lonnie, beyond the street hustler and to the scared and desperate man underneath. I don’t get the sense that he expected to fall for the beautiful Lonnie, but he did. I really liked this story, the characters and situations. I especially liked how she incorporated the secondary characters into this story. Lonnie and his friend Valeena were not only best friends, they were family, loving and looking out for each other.
She also portrayed the cops and agents as actual human being with hearts. These aren’t cynical or jaded LEOs and federal agents but men who were just as affected by the violence that surrounds the sex workers. These men have all sowed their feelings to enter into each situation and the result is really nice. This series is a really nice read and one that I will definitely continue.
