REVIEW:
What a cute story! The title caught my attention, then the sweet werewolves on the cover sealed it for me!
This story has a very different and creative take on the standard werewolf mythology. Wolves don’t shift until they have been exposed to their mate. There are also two types of shifts, sort of a partial shift into a human/wolf hybrid, and a shift into a full wolf form. There seem to be lots of alpha wolves, I couldn’t quite get that part, they don’t seem to be pack alphas, just strong wolves. They also produce a knot when mating with their fated mate, which I have seen occasionally in shifter books, and I think is kind of cool. I swear there was the mention of a pregnant male at the beginning of the book, but it went by fast!
So Tanner is an alpha wolf, but doesn’t have a mate. He’s thirty, much older that is common for a wolf to find a mate, and he’s getting a bit desperate. He takes a job in Chicago, at a small book publishing company, hoping to find his mate in a new city. After his first day at work he begins to have dreams that indicate he may have found his mate. The problem is he doesn’t know who it was! So he goes on a hunt to find his mate…. He makes a list of all of the men in his office and invites them out to determine which is his mate. Meanwhile, it’s pretty obvious to us who is mate is, I couldn’t figure out why Tanner was so blind actually. But he eventually figures out his mate is right under his nose the whole time! Unfortunately his mate has vanished! Jon has gone home to deal with a family crisis, not knowing that he’s left his mate behind… Off Tanner goes on a quest to find his mate, and we get a nice little bit of romance in the woods, but a dose of family drama.
I enjoyed this story quite a bit! It’s a clever take on the typical werewolf story, and I loved Tanner and Jon. There was just enough drama with Jon’s family to keep me interested, I liked his families inclusion in the story. It was not a complex plot, it could have been more exciting, and there were times I wish there had been more of an explanation about why things were happening. But overall it was a good basic story. There was a scene at the beginning involving the use of a pillow and mashed potatoes that had me laughing out loud! I loved the bond that forms between Tanner and Jon, first as co-workers, then as friends, and finally mates. Jon is virginal and sweet, Tanner is patient and kind. I liked the characters, I liked the plot, and the writing was good, I’ve read a couple of books by Nico Jaye, and I’ve enjoyed them. This was a nice evening read for me, I was very happy with it.
