TITLE: A Cowboy For Keeps
AUTHOR: J.D. Walker
PUBLISHER: JMS Books, LLC
LENGTH: 33 Pages
BLURB: Slim Montagne is about to leave town and head home when he stumbles over a pair of long, lean legs on the sidewalk. Daniel “Danny” Crane, a battered, dusty and bruised cowboy, is world-weary and has stopped believing in humanity. A drifter, his last ride left him on the side of the road, and he just barely made it to town before collapsing against the nearest wall.
When Slim offers Danny a place to stay, he’s suspicious, but figures he has nothing left to lose. Back at the ranch, Slim introduces Danny to Ret and Roscoe, two other men who live and work on the property. Turns out, Ret, Roscoe and Slim have a very intimate relationship, and they’re more than willing to add Danny to their circle.
All Danny has to do is be their cowboy, for keeps.
REVIEW:
This short story was sweet in it’s simplicity and length.
Danny is this young man who has drifted through life as he’s been on his own since he was thrown out for being gay. Danny has had to do things to survive that a young man shouldn’t have to do, but he’s done it. Danny doesn’t trust easy as his life has been a reminder that you can be hurt time and again. Especially since the way he met Slim, Ret and Roscoe was proof that people can’t be trusted.
Slim…well Slim is a good man. Even if his thoughts about Danny are somewhat less than pure, the reason he stopped to help Danny, now THAT was so sweet and so damn kind. Slim is that man. He did the same for Ret and Roscoe. He took them in and they became a family. Slim is a good guy and that came across loud and clear.
This short story was filled with love, hope, faith, determination and family. It was sweet, and yet not overly sweet. Just short and sweet enough to fall for these guys and wish them well.
