Seiran Rou’s life is complicated—he’s the only male in the world allowed to take magic classes in a female-dominant society, his vampire boyfriend, Gabe, is hinting that he wants more, and his mother is demanding a grandchild. But when a co-worker turns up dead on his doorstep, Seiran realizes his problems are only beginning.
With the police dogging his steps, a stalker-like bartender watching his every move, and a magic groupie following him around, Seiran is finding it hard to hide his power—a power that if revealed could get him killed. The Dominion, the ruling body of elemental magic, seems to have started a deadly game to control the rare magic he possesses.
Someone is pulling strings, murdering witches, and gathering power. When Seiran finds himself next on the hit list, he doesn’t know whether to run and hide or prove himself to be the powerful witch he is. If he stands up and fights, he’ll have to decide what is more important—hiding his power or protecting the ones he loves.
REVIEW:
I usually shy away from stories with established relationships but I was immediately drawn to the paranormal aspects of this story. I’ve always loved stories with underdogs and Seiran is the epitome of an underdog. This story was magical on so many levels, pardon the pun. I absolutely fell in love with this story, and these men, and the side characters; everything was amazing. I started this book and could not put it down. The writing was magnificent all the elements that created such a rich and thought out plot.
Seiran Rou comes from a long line of powerful witches. Unfortunately for Seiran all the powerful witches are in fact women. While in college Seiran faces abuse and ridicule because of his sex. Being gay and being male has caused Seiran a lot of strife in his short life, but he has a secret he holds close to his heart. He knows if the Dominion or his mother ever found out how powerful a witch he really was, he’d be dead in no time. As an escape he relies heavily on his on again off again vampire lover Gabe.
Gabe is madly and passionately in love with Seiran. Seiran knows but he acts like he doesn’t because he is deathly afraid of any type of commitment due to abuse he received from a past lover. Gabe is a very old, very knowledgeable vampire. He’s known very early on that Seiran is the man for him and he knows it’s just a matter of time for Seiran to realize that as well.
Even though Seiran fought it tooth and nail, you could feel the love he had for Gabe. Another very important part of this story was Jaime. Throughout the majority of the story there was this constant protective force always hovering around Seiran. Jaime made sure Seiran was safe and protected throughout the book and when we find out why, I swear my heart cheered. I loved knowing Seiran had other family that would love him, wholeheartedly.
There’s lots of twists, mystery, angst, and terrible turns but this story is a must read. I loved everything about it and can’t wait to sink my teeth into book 2.
