Call it fate, or karma, or a downturn in the market, but this opinionated cynic is now forced to play rent-a-cop in a dying office building in the burbs just to make ends meet. Throw in an unhinged ex, a coworker who hates him, and a hot new boss, and suddenly everything is uncertain.
Miles doesn’t plan on liking the night shift or becoming embroiled in a mystery that reawakens old passions and puts him in danger. And he certainly doesn’t plan on falling for the overbearing head of security, Colton Decker, former soldier and doting dad. But nights like these can change a man, make him start to believe there’s more to life than a high-paying job and a warm body in his bed. With a thief on the loose and his new job in jeopardy, Miles will have to decide what’s truly important. He might discover things he never knew he wanted… as long as he makes it through the night.
REVIEW:
Chris Scully is a “new to me” author which usually makes me equal parts frantic and excited when I read a “new to me” authors work. Not to mention how much I love a good mystery that sparks a heated romance. This story was a good blend of mystery, intrigue, lust, attraction, desperation, and hope. Chris’s writing style drew me in and I needed to get to the end to find out the answers to all the questions I had swarming around in my head.
Miles Koprowski has been down on his luck recently. Having been laid off from cushy IT job and losing his Golddigger lover he’s desperate for a change. Being out of work for awhile when he gets a hit at a security company he jumps at the opportunity. He finds himself actually liking the work especially when he realizes the beautiful man he bumped into at a coffee shop is actually his boss. Trying extremely hard to put his feelings for his boss aside he immediately intrigued by some mysterious things that have been happening around the office. Using his college background as an art major he dives head first into the mystery trying to help out his new boss, Colton.
Colton Decker is put together perfection. He a security manager for a copier company and relishes his uneventful life. Having spent what seems like half his life in the Army overseas, a cushy desk job is just what he needs. Plus he is a single father to a teenage girl; dangerous situations are something he simply cannot have.
Unfortunately, after a security guard is run down and killed things start to unravel while Miles and Colton try to investigate the events their relationship grows deeper.
I really like Colton a lot and I like Miles too but there was something about him that just wasn’t as endearing as Colton was. Just sort of put me off him. But that didn’t take away from how much I loved them together. The anticipation of them getting together was perfect. I loved the buildup.
Without giving too much away the mystery of the story and the whole art heist scenario I really enjoyed. I loved how Miles seemed so hard on himself like a talentless hack but actually held this knowledge that truly was remarkable. I really enjoyed this book and am interested in others by this author.
