AUTHOR: Jon Keys
PUBLISHER: Decadent Publishing
LENGTH: 73 pages
BLURB:
When the world crashes down around your ears, sometimes all you can do is punt and hope for the best. That’s exactly what James and Micah decide to do when one of them is diagnosed with cancer, and the other discovers a serious heart defect. When the doctor tells them to start working on their bucket lists, the two take a trip in an effort to create some good memories, and forget the ugly truths, while they focus on their time in each other’s arms.
Their vacation turns into much more than they anticipated when they find themselves drawn to a club like sailors to a siren. Several sexy waiters, some unforgettable lap dances, and one whip-wielding stud later, they stumble upon the answer to their prayers. Their sex is wild again, and the pair find themselves living for tomorrow. But with every answer comes questions, and Micah’s search for more may destroy them both.
Will they be able to recover from his thirst for the truth? Or will the men always live walking on the edge of a Razor?
REVIEW:
Wow! What a surprising story!
I picked this story up when it came in as an author request for a review, knowing nothing about the author but the blurb sounded interesting. I am happy to say I enjoyed it! It’s a retelling of a Grimm fairy tale called The Gifts of the Little People. I’m not a reader of fairy tales, I know about the Grimm stories but I’m not very familiar with them, and had not heard of this tale. I did read Razor first, then went and found the story it’s based on after. I do wish I had read the Grimm version first, I think it would have made this story a little more understandable. Even after reading Razor I was thinking it was an interesting story, but I didn’t really get it, until I went and found The Gifts of the Little People. So here is the link to the Grimm fairy tale in case you want to go read it first: The Gifts of the Little People.
So this story is a little strange and starts off very dark. Micah and James have been together for quite some time, when Micah is diagnosed with cancer. There is nothing that can be done, and he’s given six months to live. Unbeknownst to Micah, James also has a health issue, and needs heart surgery. James refuses to have the surgery, or even tell Micah he is sick, because he wants to spend the last few months Micah has left together, not in a hospital recovering. Micah’s doctor tells them they should go on a vacation, do whatever they want while they can. Off to the big city they go, for a weekend on the town.
They are out wandering after dinner, when they hear strange music coming from a club, following it to the source, they get pulled in to the realm of oddness…. There isn’t a lot of plot so I’ll not give any more of it away. I will say it’s strange at times, but having read the fairy tale it’s based on, it all makes sense!
This is story is really about trusting and believing. When something amazing and miraculous is given to you, shut up and accept it! Don’t question, and DON’T ask for more. It’s a clever story, an interesting retelling of a fairy tale, and quite good. For the most part I liked the writing, there was some odd dialogue now and then, and a few stumbling phrases, but the story is very creative. I see the original story in this one, but also a modern twist. There are a few good sex scenes, including some felching, which always makes me a bit squeamish, but the connection between the two characters is strong and comes through. It is short, so it was hard to get to know Micah and James, but I did like what there is of them. I liked that they were a committed couple, no insta-love thrown in to a short story here. You know they are in love and a couple at the beginning. Stories this length are hard to do, and this one is very well done! Give it a try, you’ll probably be surprised, like I was!
