TITLE: Shadowing Mace
AUTHOR: Cheyenne Meadows
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 117 Pages
Blurb:
With his brother away at a conference, alpha wolf shifter Shadow finds himself paired with IT analyst Mace, the one man he can’t stand. Stuck with the partnership due to his pack leader’s order, Shadow can only count down the days until his life returns to normal. He’s a loner. Period. No matter how much his inner beast protests.
Mace isn’t thrilled either, but can’t resist the temptation to push all the surly alpha’s buttons, even as he fantasizes about what could be. Flirting with danger, he’s determined to make the best of the situation, if he can only get Shadow to give in to both their desires.
Unfortunately, a twisted revenge-seeker has other plans. A series of events rocks the entire pack, leaving innocent people hurt and fear running rampant. Both men are thrust into the chaos, working tirelessly to track down the culprit before someone winds up dead. The pressure of trying to stay a jump ahead, with absolutely no clues, pushes them to the brink. Add in a burning hunger for each other, and their world begins to crumble around them. With no other choice, they have to trust and depend on one another in order to have a chance at solving the mystery and saving lives.
Review:
Shifter stories are my absolute favorites. I probably read more of them than any other genre, so I’m always happy when I’m asked to review a new one.
Shadow is a man used to having things his way, so when the pack Alpha partner’s him with the man who knows just how to push his buttons, he can’t help but think that it’s going to be pure hell.
Mace is just as annoyed, but also admits that his fascination with the other wolf is as strong as his irritation.
Watching these two wolves circle around each other is humorous and hot, and I enjoyed the banter between them immensely. Right from the beginning of their unlikely partnership, they work together seamlessly and it isn’t long before Mace has some epiphanies of his own about the life that Shadow must lead, being in charge of the packs safety.
It was interesting to watch as their relationship evolved. It started off as sex, but it quickly becomes apparent that they are destined for more. As they investigate the danger that seems to be building within their pack, they go from mutual irritants to trusted partners…to something that catches them by surprise, even though it shouldn’t.
It’s interesting that the mystery in the story isn’t really what the story is about. It’s about the developing relationship between Shadow and Mace, and the tragedies striking their town is really just a small backdrop to watch them move together.
The sex is incredibly hot and well written and Shadow and Mace are characters that are easy to connect with right from the beginning. I was never put off by Shadow’s reserve or Mace’s arrogance because the author made it clear that there was so much more to them than what we get to see at first.
The side characters in this book are really non-existent. They pop up quickly to move the plot along and that’s about it. I would have also liked the anticipation to build a little more before getting to the obvious climax (no pun intended) but all in all, there isn’t too much to complain about. I always want more to a story because I’m greedy and not always because it needs it…I just want it.
I will be going and checking out Cheyenne Meadow’s other stories. I like her writing style and enjoyed the ride she took me on immensely. If you like big, well-matched men (and shifters) who are smart, funny and sometimes unexpectedly tender, you will love this story.
