When Rocky met Dex, it was hate at first sight. Country superstar Dex Dexter represented everything that budding rock star Rocky McCoy had left behind him in the Deep South – the religion, the homophobia, the hypocrisy, the lies. And Rocky represented everything that Dex had denied, had turned away from, had refused…
When Rocky met Dex, it was love at first touch. Double booked in the same slot on the main stage at CrossFest, they fought for the microphone like two dogs fighting over a bone. And when their hands met…
Rocky has had enough. “No more falling for straight guys. No way. No matter how hot. Especially if the ‘straight guy’ looks to me like a major closet case.”
Dex has had enough. “No way. I can’t be gay. I can’t lose my family, my friends, my career. I can’t.”
What they’ve had enough of doesn’t matter. It’s what they’ve never had enough of that will bring them together…

Are you fan of country music or rock music?
I’m a rock guy. I grew up in Nevada, so there was a lot of country music around me, but being gay and weird, there was no doubt which way I’d go musically. I love a lot of the stuff that Rocky discovers in New York, LCD Soundsystem and the James Murphy sound. Rocky’s idol Chris Cornell of Soundgarden/Audioslave is my dream man too, so it was easy to write Rocky’s crush on him. Right now I’m listening a lot to the new records from Interpol, Spoon, the Decemberists, Father John Misty, and Belle and Sebastian. I always have music on when I’m writing, and I love discovering new music.
What inspired you to write this story?
Well, to be honest, I was trying to cash in on a trend for rock star stories. I really did intend for “Have a Little Faith in Me” to be a series of erotic shorts, the rock star and the country star meet and then within 5k words they’re doin’ it so hard. But when I started writing it, Rocky and Dex suddenly needed a conflict, what was it that drew them together and blew them apart at the same time? Then I put Dex in the closet, and realized Rocky hated that because he grew up in a crazy religious household, and…pow! All of a sudden they were developing backstories, which just doesn’t fit with the light, fast tone of a short story. So I had to write a novel.
How did you come up with the title Have a Little Faith In Me?
I really do love that John Hiatt song. Then I wrote a scene where Dex hides from his dysfunctional family in the garage, right after his father had told him he’d never be a musician. I realized how hard it was going to be for him, with no emotional support from his family. And his decision to sing that song, just softly, under his breath, really was a cry, a request, that someone have a little faith in him, believe in him. I instantly knew that was the books’ title. And then there are the religious undertones of the whole idea of “faith,” that Rocky has to deal with. Rocky’s grandmother has faith in him, but it’s the family’s religious faith that nearly derails his life.
What country or rock musician would you like to have dinner with? Why?
I would pick Bruce Springsteen. I really admire him for his integrity, his persistence, his outspokenness on social and political issues, his whole career. I would love to pick his brain on how he maintains such a high standard of quality, such an incredible energy level, well into middle age.
Do you set yourself goals for the year? Why or why not?
I set shorter term goals. This business is so crazy, that you can’t predict what will or won’t sell in a year’s time. I couldn’t have ever predicted in December that I’d be making all kinds of money on stepbrother stories in February! My project goals are usually about three months in duration – long enough for a novel, and whatever shorts inspire me during that time.
What project are you working on now?
I’ve got a novel in progress, called “Would I Lie to You?” It’s about a software billionaire whose company is hacked, and he has to bring in a security consultant who’s an ex-convict hacker himself. They have a very electric relationship, very kinky and conflicted and interesting…Marc and Jesse are going to be great characters, especially since I’m a full time writer now and I can do right by them!
And of course there my Nick and Kyle stepbrother stories. Amsterdam is next for the dudes, and then I think maybe Berlin… I want to finish a winter quartet for these, in the chilly northern cities, and then wrap up the series with a summer quartet (Florence, Paris, Barcelona, sexy places like that).
And I just started a potential series, “Training Christopher Blue,” about a billionaire dom who ends up getting dommed himself by a Svengali/mentor type. Not sure what I’m going to do with that, since I don’t want to use up ideas here that I really need for the dom/sub relationship in the novel. But I’ll think of something, I’m sure.
Rocky picked up the Gibson Hummingbird. Chris Cornell played one of these. What more did he need to know?
He knew exactly what he wanted to play. How many times had he played this song, how many times had he stretched his voice, discovering his own vocal range. The notes of “Like a Stone” flowed from his fingers in a waterfall, and the words were a flock of birds banking wildly in front of the cascade, flirting with disaster.
He came to the end, the roaring finish, his eyes closed as he sang the epic wave of notes in the last word of the song, “alone.”
He’d only ever played the song when he was alone with Korey, who was no cheerleader. Korey would nod, say, “Good job.” And then tell him where he missed something.
When he was done, he opened his eyes. His new friends were speechless. “Was it okay?” he asked doubtfully.
“Holy fucking great mother of God,” Rick gasped. “Who the fuck are you? Where did you come from?”
Rocky smiled. “Under a rock. I’ve been living under a rock.”

Rock and roll – but I don’t mind a little country!
More classic rock and roll.
Maybe a little bit more rock & roll, but nothing like a country guy in tight Wranglers and a cowboy hat.
I’m definitely a lot more rock & roll. I have never really been interested in country music. The books sounds great. Thanks for the giveaway.
rock & roll…but don’t mind a bit of country
i say i am alittle bit country
I am a little bit more country than I am rock & roll 🙂 thank you for a chance to win a copy of this book
Well, the last show I went to, aside from a hardcore show in Chicago (Madball) was Spoon in Indianapolis, and my next is the Decemberists in Michigan in a few weeks, I’m going to go with rock & roll. I will definitely have to bump this book up a bit closer on my tbr pile though 🙂
