REVIEW:
When Sidney wakes up one morning to discover Colby and Brook, the sexy cottontail shifter twins, have temporarily moved into his family home he’s not sure whether he should be excited or worried. They’ve been the objects of his unrequited fantasies since he had a clue what a fantasy was, but although he enjoys any chance to just look at them, spending any length of time in their company is hard for him. He’s not certain why, but he’s gotten the impression that the bunnies don’t really like him.
Brook and Colby apparently live up to the phrase “fuck like bunnies” but unlike most overly promiscuous rabbit shifters, they only fuck with each other. However, from the time Sidney was sixteen both twins have been aware that one day the young duck would also be theirs to love. Waiting for him to grow up wasn’t easy for them and in the end they stupidly thought it was best to avoid him altogether until the time was right. But now Sidney is twenty years old and when the violence aimed at the twins brings all three men back together Colby and Brook decide that they’ve been patient for long enough.
Firstly, I went in to this book somehow overlooking that this was book two of a series. Luckily that didn’t impact my enjoyment at all and I only realized there was a previous book because a barely sighted background couple in this story was just so gosh darned cute I thought surely they have their own story. And they do. The first book in this series is called Backwoods Asylum and you can read it first, second or never because Rabbit Season definitely reads as a standalone.
What I liked best about this book was the absolutely, perfectly laid back approach to the world building. (And the first book reads the same way.) Basically shifters exist alongside humans in the same world we live in now. Humans have no idea that shifters exist but a good portion of the shifter population is pushing to change that. There are rallies and meetings as people argue for or against but that is all going on in the background and little bits of information are simply dropped into the story as we need them. There are never any long explanations of what is going on or how the shifter world works. And while I thought it was all very interesting and would have actually liked to know more, it wasn’t necessary to the story and honestly would have dragged down the snappy pacing.
I also was rather tickled (oh I love that saying) that the shifters were a decidedly strange choice of animal. Although there are the obligatory wolves sprinkled about, I’ve definitely never read a shifter story about ducks and rabbits before. And one of the MCs from the first book is a poisonous snake. I only wish there would have actually been a little more shifting involved but, at the same time, I kind of wonder just how exciting could the author have made a couple of bunnies and a duck?
And speaking of two bunnies and a duck, it was interesting that the fact that a duck would sleep with a rabbit was a bigger issue for most of the characters in this book than the fact that it was two rabbits, or that the two rabbits were twins and also sleeping with each other. Rabbits are viewed as the embarrassing trollops of the shifter world and the elitist ducks are not at all happy that their future leader would lower himself to consort with them.
The three men were all kinds of hot together and once they finally decide it’s time to act, the twins don’t mess around. There’s no build up, no teasing or flirting or are-we-going-to-do-this? They don’t even wait to get inside before they’re…going at it like rabbits? Before they decide to fuck a duck? Umm, before the feathers are flying? Ok, I really need to quit now before I embarrass myself further.
