Dario Ramos thought he’d left the fighting behind in the war zone when a life-threatening injury sent him home. But a certain Irishman crossing his path everywhere he went convinced him that his biggest battle might be ahead. Tiernan Callahan is a bigoted jerk. Ramos finds himself constantly in the man’s orbit, even in a city as big as New York. The wounded warrior knows all about pain and loss — and that sometimes anger is the only form of release. When Tiernan once again crowds Ramos’ space, his eyes are opened to the possibility of other forms of release.
Tough NYC cop Tiernan Callahan is still mourning the death of his beloved youngest brother, Mason. Fearing his close-minded family’s reaction, the young soldier never got to tell them his secret — that he was gay and engaged to the love of his life. Tiernan is surviving on anger and guilt. When he continues to run into Dario Ramos, who continues to push his buttons, something inside him snaps. Suddenly, anger isn’t the only emotion he feels.
Two very different men, still trying to heal: Can they come to an understanding and heal each other?
REVIEW:
I have been waiting A Healing Man for so long and it’s finally here. The author has been teasing all of us on Facebook with little snippets and lines like “why are you such a prick?”, “well if it isn’t officer asshole” and one of my personal favorites, “you and buttboy here are going to be riding together.” With teases like that my anticipation was at its highest, not that after reading the previous books the teasing was necessary, and I was definitely not disappointed.
It’s never easy dealing with loss, whether it is the loss of a loved one or the loss of a limb. It’s how you deal with the loss that can make you feel better or make you feel worse, a better person or a jackass. When Tiernan lost his brother Mason to the war overseas he discovered a secret his brother was keeping from him, Mason was gay and in love. Tiernan didn’t deal with this very well, especially at the funeral when seeing Mason’s fiancé Casper, and Tiernan was a big doucherag. Giving Tiernan the benefit, he was hurt and had just found out a big secret about his brother, but he was also raised by a homophobic bible spouting mother, which is no excuse but it does open your eyes a little of where his hate is coming from.
Those of you who have read the previous books from this series might remember Ramos calling Tiernan a SID at the funeral, you will find out more about that in this book and if you don’t know what it means, you will. Not giving too much away, you might also find out if Tiernan also lives up to it.
Since the funeral Tiernan hasn’t been the best cop that he could be and it is ruining his reputation. His Captain decides to give him a new partner, Danny who happens to be the Captain’s brother and also happens to be gay. Oh my God, the banter between the Captain and Danny, you can’t help but feel the brotherly love and respect they have for one another, also the way Danny teases and ruffles Tiernan’s feathers is priceless.
Dario Ramos is dealing with the loss of his leg and the loss of his brother in arms Mason the best that he can, now if only he could deal with constantly running into Tiernan the same way. Since Ramos first met Tiernan at the funeral all he’s wanted to do was beat him down the way he treated his friend Casper, but things keep happening that are forcing their paths to cross. No matter how much of a jackass Tiernan is you can’t help but want the best for him because you know deep down he is a good man.
I don’t know how Ms. Gasq-Dion does it but I’m so glad that she does. She writes some of the best male characters and the stories that go along with them. With Dario Ramos and Tiernan she has continued the Men of Manhattan series beautifully, tying in the characters from previous books, but at the same time keeping it new. She does an excellent job at keeping the reader coming back and wanting more.
I highly recommend this book, as well as the previous books from the Men of Manhattan series. If you have already read the previous four books in this series, you will not be disappointed with this next installment. You will cry, laugh, feel heartbreak… all the emotions that Sandrine can bring out of you and you will love her for it. Enjoy book 5 in the Men of Manhattan series, I know I have. Already I can’t wait for the next installment in the series and if will be about Danny and Ryan…or Bobby…or maybe the other Callahan, Michael. The only thing I know for sure is that Sandrine Gasq-Dion will keep you guessing and in great anticipation.
If you want not only a great book to read but a great series, go get this book today!
