Half an inch. Roman’s life has been taken over and destroyed by half an inch of poison-filled metal. Unable to deny the control Denzel now holds over him, Roman is no better than a puppet, controlled and used in however horrifying way the shadowkin leader orders. He longs for his freedom, an escape before he is forced to kill again, but without the ability to so much as lift a finger by his own choice, the most he can pray for is a merciful end.
Dorian is a Gregorian angel, tasked with witnessing the events of man, yet forbidden to interfere in any way. The consequences of breaking the Gregorian covenant are final, fatal, but something about Roman, the demon he finds imprisoned by the shadow elves, has him longing to break all the rules. Torn between duty and what his heart is telling him is right, Dorian chooses to fall, to touch the demon regardless of what the consequences will mean. He knows he has made the right decision and will happily live out the rest of his life with his choice, for however short that now might be.
REVIEW:
In the tenth installment of the Preternatural Rescue Centre series, Wings of Exile, we pick up where the last book left off. Roman, a demon guardian, has been taken hostage by the shadowkin leader Denzel. He has been injected with an implant that has poisoned his body with shadows putting him under Denzel’s compulsion. He has done horrific acts as their puppet and the only place he can escape is within his own mind. Even with his demon burning away the poison slowly, both he and his counterpart are weak and he feels like he is on his last leg. Dorian, a Gregorian angel, has been sent to investigate the weakness in the veil. He is given one rule to follow by, do not touch any other outside of his Gregorian race. For if that were to happen he would be cut off from the source, a life giving energy, and he would die. All his life he has been told about a big decision that would change his destiny and as he is sent down he realizes that this is that time.
After surveying the aftermath of the battle at the weak point of the veil, Dorian dismisses his brother Tiberius back to their home to report to their father, and continues on his journey. He follows the life trails until Dorian comes across one soul. A soul that is filled with so much pain that he has to see where it leads. He comes across a barn surrounded by shadow beasts and goes inside. Dorian sees a man that is covered in a sickness but his soul is pure. That man of course is Roman, and unable to stand by and watch Dorian hovers his hand over Roman’s point of infection and destroys the implant. He continues to visit Roman and heals him slowly, telling him to bide his time. During the slow healing process, the shadow leader still uses and abuses Roman and he is growing tired. After one particularly bad event, the shadow leader grows tired of Roman’s fighting his compulsion and orders the mages to turn him into a shadow beast, meaning he would be lost forever. Dorian can’t stand by any longer and sacrifices his life in order to save Roman. He touches Roman and in turn cuts himself off from the source and carries Roman back to the guardian compound. After they are both rescued and Roman learns of the extremes that Dorian went to, he binds a bit of his demon to Dorian knowing that eventually they would become mates.
I do not recommend that this be read as a standalone. In order to know a lot of what is going on you must read the previous books since there are a lot of repeat characters, and the battles will make a lot of sense. I did enjoy this book quite a bit. It is probably one of my favorite ones of the series. Dorian is so loving, and just a beautiful soul and it’s easy to see how he is an angel. He couldn’t deal with Roman’s suffering and gave what he thought would be his life just to have Roman survive. Roman I loved from past books. It was hard to see the funny, snarky, tough guy suffer. I could imagine how hard it was for him to know his body was responsible for such horrific acts. But we also got to see how strong he was to be able to fight so long before he gave up was admirable. When they finally got back to the rescue it was so cute to see the two of them together. I knew they would get together obviously but still I loved the ride. Dorian although sweet showed a bit of sass and proved he was a great partner for Roman. Roman also showed how loving he was with Dorian, and even though he had been through hell, it had allowed him to grow from that experience as well. I loved the beginning, middle, and end to this book. Please pick up the whole series and I guarantee you will enjoy it as much as I do.
