Sometimes you have to risk everything, to follow your heart…
Noble Pleasures, Book 1
In a world where gentlemen openly court and marry fellow noblemen, the threat of scandal still lurks behind every velvet drape for kings and princes. Such has been the fate for King Arend Tollemach, forced to sacrifice his heart on the altar of regal duty.
Now that his wife is dead and his royal obligations are at an end, he’s ready to take an unthinkable risk. King Arend seeks a concubine from Temple Sapphor, a secretive, gated world where he will finally shed his virginity—as least as it pertains to making love to a man.
Julian never thought he’d spend ten years on the temple shelf, passed over again and again. Just when he despairs of ever finding placement in a nobleman’s bed, Arend walks into the temple. A lonely eyed, beautiful king who could easily steal his heart.
Arend discovers he has no problem opening his bed to the exquisite concubine. The problem lies in finding the key to his long-shuttered heart.
Warning: Contains a beautiful, virgin king desperate to bed another man, a concubine who fantasizes about being claimed and revered by a strong monarch, and a sea of scandal set against a sensual, palatial backdrop.

I’m often asked where I get my ideas for stories, and the question is such a good one. It gives me reason to pause and actually consider where, precisely, my worlds do come from. I’ve had an idea for entire book series while getting out of a taxi cab at an airport. In the past two weeks, I’ve gotten a very high concept idea for a new contemporary after watching a documentary. BOYS OF SUMMER (my very first m/m romance) came about during a beach vacation, and I wrote the entire thing while sitting under a beach umbrella every day. In all these cases, the idea began with a small whisper that became a song in my mind. And wouldn’t stop growing louder.
So how do I know which ideas to run with? When that song doesn’t get longer, bigger, even louder. Instead it sort of fades back away. It’s also a matter of timing—sometimes an idea doesn’t ever come together for me because there’s no real time to devote to it, and then the spark fades. The magic is gone, and it becomes relegated to that place in my idea folder that molders and never cracks open again. And then other times? I wind up stumbling upon a forgotten gem—which is how A KING UNDONE came about.
I was searching for material in one of my much older series, and came upon an entire novella that, having been saved in the wrong place on my hard drive, I’d forgotten completely. It was a ménage, about a young prince, his new bride, and their bedroom tutor—and of course told the tale of how all three fell in love. The story had been one I wrote for me, to be honest, never anything I planned to publish. Yet when I re-discovered it last year? I had a new whisper of a song—an idea that took hold. I asked myself, “What if I explored why that prince’s father was so dead set against their relationship?” King Arend, I knew, was a man who’d been denied a youthful love for another young man, because he was forced to marry a female and sire heirs.
Thus A KING UNDONE was born, even as it dashed the original premise of that novella to bits (in case you ask me to publish it!) King Arend is a monarch who fulfilled royal obligations by marrying a woman as a very young man, and siring a prince. But now widowed at a relatively young age, he’s finally able to ask himself, “What do I really want from my life? And who do I want to be with…if not a woman?”
And maybe, really, that’s a big part of how my ideas form—by my asking myself questions. About the characters, the scenario, the concept of the book. In fact, I’d say that all fiction does just that. Sets about answering question after question: “What happens if King Arend decides he can have sex without love…but meets his true love? How does that other man, Julian, set about overcoming all of Arend’s carefully erected walls?” Question after question, answer after answer, until a novel is on the page. But it all starts with a whisper.
I hope you’ll read A KING UNDONE and discover what sort of song it sings within you.
Cooper Davis first discovered the allure of m/m storytelling when she watched My Beautiful Launderette with a college roommate. Later, her passion for stories about men falling in love and finding their HEA together was stoked by online slash fiction. After years as an avid fan of m/m and slash, Cooper finally decided to try her hand at penning her own stories about same-gender romance and love.
A voracious reader across all subgenres of m/m fiction, Cooper is particularly fond of courtships set against the breathless backdrop of scandal and intrigue found in period drawing rooms. She is thrilled that her first historically themed m/m romance series debuts this December with A KING UNDONE (Samhain).
