When Adam’s father catches him in bed with his best friend, he rips Adam away from his comfortable life in the city and sends him to a farm in the country, hoping some hard work will “fix” him. When Ben kisses him, Adam is shocked and delighted but terrified his father will once again pull him away from a home he’s grown to like. As their relationship grows in secret, Ben promises to stay with Adam when school starts to help him get to know the place and the people. However, Amelia, a young woman Ben had dated, latches on to Ben again. Adam is furious at being abandoned to fend for himself on his first day in a new school. A physical confrontation with Amelia lands Adam in trouble again, and his father’s involvement complicates all their lives. Betrayal and an uncertain future threaten Adam and Ben’s budding summer relationship.
REVIEW:
Poor young Adam, first he gets caught making out with his best friend and romantic interest Mark by his father. Then Mark runs for the hills and pushes Adam away from him, declares himself straight and blames Adam for swaying him to be gay which he swears now that he is not. He also does not want to see Adam anymore and actually becomes mean to the point of violence.
Dear old dad won’t even talk to him anymore except to tell him to pack his things and won’t even tell him where they are going until after hours of driving into the countryside. Where turns out to be an old family farm where he hopes to fix what is wrong with his son so that he will turn straight and forget all about being gay by being around some “real men” doing real men’s work. Hah! That never works does it? Needless to say Adam doesn’t react very well to this news right up until he meets Ben, a fellow worker on the farm and what do you know!! He is gay and will be attending the same school where Adam is going to be finishing his senior year of high school. Seems like it is all going to go his way after all, he doesn’t mind the countryside, his dad is no longer totally spazzing out and he has a new bff /bf. The boyfriend though just happens to be in the closet and dating a girl in school. Damn, doesn’t that bite? We have all the angst, turmoil and hurt you would expect in those circumstances, but this time Adam decides to fight for what he wants, damn the consequences. This is a young adult book and does not have any heavy sex involved but is a well written novel that will appeal to all ages
