Turner Michaels is an idealistic junior enlisted communicator who wants nothing more than to successfully execute his duties. After being transferred to a light armored reconnaissance unit in the middle of the Mojave Desert, the young Marine starts to feel a bit overwhelmed and out of place from his usual role of support— until he is reunited with his old friend Jace Sozio.
Jace is impulsive, headstrong, and loyal to a fault, but carrying a chip on his shoulder and keeping others at a distance is easier than being true to himself. Reconnecting with his closest friend from basic training might be simple, but the intense yet awkward attraction growing between them complicates both their personal and professional lives.
Can devotion and honor be stronger than bigotry and misperception? The Corps has always been a sacred brotherhood where men and women trust each other with their lives—but Turner and Jace will have to find a different way to fit the General Issue mold.
REVIEW:
If you like military genre, this is a book for you. Thaddeus J, our author, has presented to us a book that is not so much scintillating as it is a testosterone filled epic filled with all the macho, alpha male goodness you expect when you dive into a book of this genre.
Turner Michaels and Jace Sozio meet on a bus filled with new recruits headed for Parris Island, a marine boot camp, and strike up a friendship. Thru boot camp the men form a close, platonic relationship as most recruits do when thrown into the tackling hell that is marine boot camp. Eventually they must go separate ways when they are assigned to different posts. A year later they are reunited and pick up their friendship but before they know it they are forming an attachment to each other beyond brothers in arms.
“Don’t ask don’t tell “ hadn’t been repealed yet in this timeline so Michaels and Sozio must keep their romance under cover as in the marines it isn’t something you want to advertise if you want the minimum of flack and harassment from your comrades in arms. Friends and commanders are also having a few interpersonal issues of their own that causes at least one of them to take his frustrations out on Michaels and Sozio, as he faces much the same problems of his own. But this is the military, heaven forbid if men who are stuck with mostly the company of other men 90 percent of the time should find themselves attracted to the other men in their units.
It is an engrossing read if military jargon is a familiar part of your vocabulary. I found myself getting a little lost amongst it all but the story had excellent character interactions and I really wanted to see how things progressed from one chapter to the next. I do have to warn you about the sex scenes. They are few and far between so don’t look for too much of the hot and sweaty clash of the titans sort of coming together you are used to in this type of genre. It was written, I think, as a military comrades in arms sort of thing with the bromance turned romance sort of thrown in. But like I said before, if you’re looking for a good, involved military epic, I think you will like this one.
