Want a Taste of BG Thomas? Try “Derek” for Free!
So there I was, a new writer, and every now and then I would see a book offered by an author for free. Of course I got them. Why wouldn’t I? And it turned out I was glad I did. I was getting a taste of an author I might never have tried. What could be better than that, especially in the days when I had no idea who to read?
It wasn’t long after that when I began to get published myself. What a dream come true. A lifetime’s dream!
Then I discover those free books are a lot of work. They need to be written just like any other book. Have blood sweat and tears poured into them. Then edited just like any other book. Re-edited like any other book. And re-edited!
They need covers designed for them. Just. Like. Any. Other. Book.
But it’s one thing to realize that the authors offered their “children” up for free. But the publisher! They were willing to do all that needs to be done to make this book happen as well. That’s a heck of a lot of work with countless people working and offering their time as well. Amazing. But Dreamspinner Press is an amazing place to work with countless wonderful people as well.
What blessings there are in my life! Five years ago I only dreamed of being an author. Since then I have experienced and lived the most wonderful life. I’ve been involved with some thirty projects (most of them with DSP), I’ve written shorts stories, novellas, novels, had books turned into audio books, been translated into Korean and German, and finally (to my thrill) I’ve gotten to help design some covers.
Yes! I got to design the cover for “Derek,” my newest novella. I discovered this most incredible photographer online named Dave Suntown and struck up a friendship with him and now I am using his work. I saw the picture of his model “Russel,” and fell instantly “in love” with him and an entire novella poured out of me. And Dave agreed to let me use his model. I knew just how I wanted it cropped, just how I wanted the title to appear, and more.
And it was while all this was happening that I knew it was my turn to offer up a free book of my own. To pass on just a bit of the blessings that have flowed into my life. And Elizabeth North of Dreamspinner Press was willing to do it.
So now it is here. “Derek.” I am crazy about this story and I don’t mind saying there is some personal stuff in here, all involving some feelings I had to work through when I finally accepted I was gay and that I could no longer be with my wife. Here is the blurb of the book….
The end of his marriage leaves Derek Newton hurt and confused, but it also grants him the opportunity to embrace who he really is: a gay man. While navigating his new life with the help of friends in the local GLBT community, Derek meets Marshall Kenworthy, a man who embodies all his fantasies.
To Derek’s surprise, Marshall is as interested as he is, and they make a date. But a failure to communicate leads to a misunderstanding. The party they attend is not what Derek expected—at all—but Marshall, ever the gentleman, makes sure Derek feels comfortable. As they get to know each other, they see how much they have in common. Derek begins to heal and soon realizes he might thrive in this new chapter of his life—and it just might be with Marshall by his side.
I hope you will check out my new book. It is my gift to you. All you have to do is open it!
And if you decide you just have to get it from Amazon instead of directly through the publisher, you can, but it’ll cost you 99 cents. Nothing I can do about that, but hey! Only 99 cents for a novella? Pretty good deal!
So happy holidays dear friends and those of you who I hope to make my friends!
With much love!

B.G. Thomas lives in Kansas City with his husband of more than a decade and their fabulous little dog. He is lucky enough to have a lovely daughter as well as many extraordinary friends. He has a great passion for life.
B.G. loves romance, comedies, fantasy, science fiction and even horror—as far as he is concerned, as long as the stories are character driven and entertaining, it doesn’t matter the genre. He has gone to literature conventions his entire adult life where he’s been lucky enough to meet many of his favorite writers. He has made up stories since he was a child; it is where he finds his joy.
In the nineties, he wrote for gay magazines but stopped because the editors wanted all sex without plot. “The sex is never as important as the characters, ” he says. “Who cares what they are doing if we don’t care about them? ” Excited about the growing male/male romance market, he began writing again. Gay men are what he knows best, after all—since he grew out of being a “practicing” homosexual long ago. He submitted a story and was thrilled when it was accepted in four days.
“Leap, and the net will appear” is his personal philosophy and his message to all. “It is never too late, ” he states. “Pursue your dreams. They will come true! ”
