Nikhilesh (Nik) Sharma hasn’t been home to Alappuzha, India, since he came out to his family ten years ago. Now that his relationship with them is less strained, he’s bringing his boyfriend Trent along to celebrate the winter holidays. As excited as he is to see everyone again, he worries the foreign culture, religious differences, and disapproval might shock Trent. At the same time, Trent worries Nik’s big, close-knit family won’t accept an American—much less a man—as Nik’s partner and that his presence will impede the otherwise happy reunion. Whether the trip leads to misunderstandings that will drive them apart or to a new understanding that will draw them closer than ever, it’s sure to be an experience they’ll never forget.
REVIEW:
Travelling to India to meets his boyfriend’s extended family during the holiday season is a bit nerve wracking for Trent. While everyone there knows who he is–and more importantly, who he is to Trent–he is not all that sure what kind of reception they will get once they land. Because as nice as Nik’s parent’s were when they visited them at home, India is a whole other barrel of fish. With all the foreign customs and people around him, Trent can’t help but feel that this meeting of families is going to be a disaster.
My last contribution to our blog’s monthly advent calendar event is this wonderful little story. I’ve always been intrigued by Indian culture–no doubt a result of a Bollywood binge ‘inflicted’ on my by a friend when I was in uni–though I really don’t know all that much about it. I liked this little dunk into the cultural pool, though. We get to learn a little about the place and the people, but we also get to see just the normal family life of Nik’s family and friends. It was nice. And I had a lot of fun reading it.
