Wealthy, attractive Lucas Reika treats life like a party, moving from bar to bar and man to man. Thumbing his nose at his restaurateur father’s demand that he earn his keep, Lucas instead seduces a valued employee in the kitchen of their flagship restaurant, earning himself an ultimatum: lose access to his father’s money or stay in the middle of nowhere with a man he has secretly lusted over from afar.
Quiet, hard-working Jared McFarland loves his farm on the outskirts of Hope, Arizona, but he aches to have someone to come home to at the end of the day. Jared agrees to take in his longtime crush as a favor. But when Lucas invades his heart in addition to his space, Jared has to decide how much of himself he’s willing to risk and figure out if he can offer Lucas enough to keep him after his father’s punishment is over.

REVIEW:
Jared McFarland is a quiet, shy farmer, who has the biggest crush on his ex-wife’s little half brother. Jared longs for someone to love, but he doesn’t really believe anyone wants to live with him on his farm. He’s also not too secure about his looks. His ex-wife is still his best friend, but otherwise he doesn’t have a lot of warmth in his life. When that same friend asks him to ‘babysit’ her little brother, he doesn’t really want to. But how do you say no to your ex-father in law, who happens to be one of your biggest customers and a man you respect greatly?
Enter Lucas. The spoiled, angry, bored and too handsome for his own good, rich boy. He doesn’t want to be on Jared’s farm, but he doesn’t have a choice if he wants to keep access to his father’s money. Little does Jared know that Lucas harbors his own crush on Jared as well.
In the beginning I kind of despised Lucas, even if I knew he must be more than he appeared. It’s a Cardeno C story, so he must he freaking wonderful, all of Cardeno’s characters are pretty amazing, so why not Lucas?
And yes, he did get a whole lot nicer, and we did get a view of why he was acting the way he did. But still, he hurt Jared, and that made me mad!
Jared is such a sweet guy. Decent, and good and…just genuinely nice. He had made the mistake of marrying his best friend, even though he knew he didn’t love her the right way. Susan knew too, but she still married Jared, so in my opinion it was a mutual mistake. Susan doesn’t seem to regret it, so maybe it wasn’t a bad thing at all.
The way the love grows between the two main characters is sweet, but not overly so. There is some angst, some emotional drama, and a whole lot of growing up going on. Again, the only thing that ever annoy me in a Cardeno novella, is that they aren’t novels. And if they are novels, they should be long, very long novels.
So, if this had been a novel, and the author had delved into the characters even deeper, then this book would have been a perfect 5/5 stars. It’s kind of a rare thing for me to rate a novella higher than 4 stars, but this one is most definitely 4.5 stars. Loved it.
***
This is one of the four audio books I’ve ever listened to, but the first one that was narrated by Paul Morey. I have to say, the man definitely has a pleasant voice. His way of reading this story felt very realistic and if it wasn’t for a few little slips, I’d say it was pretty much perfect.
The little slips happened mostly in the first half of the story. When he was reading and probably thought the sentence would come to an end, he’d made the sentence sound like there would be a period, but there were still a few words left. That sounded kind of awkward, especially in the beginning. Later, when I was getting really into the story, I could just listen past that, and enjoy the story and wonderful voice.
The rating for the Audio-book would be 4.25 stars
The rating for the story itself a 4.5 stars.
Overall rating; 4.5 stars. Excellent book, great audio with a wonderful narrator, who only had a few minor – in my opinion—slips.
