TITLE: Who Knows the Storm
SERIES: The Vigilante #1
AUTHOR: Tere Michaels
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 240 Pages
BLURB:
In a dystopian near future, New York City has become the epicenter of decadence—gambling, the flesh trade, a playground for the wealthy. And underneath? Crime, fueled by “Dead Bolt,” a destructive designer drug. This New City is where Nox Boyet leads a double life. At night, he is the Vigilante, struggling to keep the streets safe for citizens abandoned by the corrupt government and police. During the day, he works in construction and does his best to raise his adopted teenaged son, Sam.
A mysterious letter addressed to Sam brings Nox in direct contact with “model” Cade Creel, a high-end prostitute working at the Iron Butterfly Casino. Suspicion gives way to an intense attraction as dark figures from Nox’s past and the mysterious peddlers of Dead Bolt begin to descend—and put all their lives in danger. When things spin out of control, Cade is the only person Nox can trust to help him save Sam.
REVIEW:
Hmmm, I’m not sure where this series is headed and what everything means, but I ALWAYS enjoy a book I can read in one setting because the pace is great and I’m enjoying the characters and plot.
This is a story of Nox, whose parents have died or were murdered during the Storm seventeen years ago, which flooded and destroyed much of the land. New York is just a ravaged shadow of what it once was, but Nox remembers what it was like before, how much he lost, what he sacrificed and what he must never lose or risk again. He is now the Vigilante. Prowling the streets at night protecting his adoptive son and others from pimps, drugs, thieves, and all other trouble.
I had some trouble grasping the enormity of the current situation for the U.S. as it was seeing as how New York appeared to be destroyed and barely put back together, but it seemed that other areas outside of the city/state were doing much better. I didn’t really get that because the idea of letting a major city like that stay damaged while other parts were fine seemed farfetched. But it’s truly possible I didn’t fully grasp the idea of this ‘world’ now, or that we may learn and explore other areas in future books.
So that aside, we have Nox, a guy that’s your atypical alpha guarding his son, and finding himself unexpectedly attracted to the most popular prostitute in the city, Cade Creel. Cade stole the show for me. He’s a young escort, but the author really wrote him so differently than other escorts. He’s not strung out, abandoned by a bad family, or naïve. He’s well aware of his charms, why he’s doing his line of work, and he’s smart and witty. The juxtaposition of Nox and Cade was nice and their UST was hot. Seriously, if all you’ve read is Michaels’ other series, Faith and Fidelity, let me tell you, you are in for a treat. The sex isn’t abundant, and you wait for it and wait for it, but it was soooooooo f’ing worth it. Dirty talk and ass in the air. Anyhoo, Nox and Cade are fun together. I would have liked a bit more development between them, but considering all of the other developments in the story going on, I understand why it wasn’t more of a focus.
Speaking of those other elements, I really enjoyed the flashbacks and back/side story going on throughout the novel. With each reveal, I find myself needing to find out what happened next and it was action-packed, suspenseful, and fun. My only complaint is that in the last quarter of the book or so, everything started to get really confusing for me. It was like I could see all of the parts of the puzzle coming together only they weren’t carefully set but rather shoved into slots that didn’t fit and needed to be tried in another area. BUT, in saying that, now I have to read the second book, because I need to understand and figure everything out in regards to Nox’s son, the two MC, and the rest of the city.
A really fun start to a series with two smoking hot guys and a teenage son that I adored.
